Still, I must admit it's disillusioning that so many people know Orson Welles not for Magnificient Ambersons or Touch of Evil or that one movie about the sled, but for being the voice of a giant planet-eating robot in Transformers: The Movie
Sometimes, the directors disputed the change of ownership of a film. I know that Doris Wishman refused to do commentary on the films because she "didn't own them". (Actually, SWV first added new titles to the bootlegged Sinister Cinema catalog when Mike acquired a print of some Doris Wishman film).
Image Entertainment releases the SWV films on DVD. I imagine their legal staff requires a little more research into whether a title can be released or not.
I will also say that even Ted Turner has bootlegged films.
The original Night of the Living Dead is falsely believed to be in the public domain (because of a technical error). Many companies illegally release this film.
The owner of Reefer Madness discovered the same theft in the 1960s. He didn't care that college kids were laughing at it (it NEVER was designed to be a scare film, it was an exploitation film that showed things the Hayes code would not permit). He just wanted to make some money on it and couldn't.
The man behind the mask.
