Walter Cronkite, the retired CBS anchor, is back on TV but not on his old network.
The 87-year-old ultra-liberal former anchor man, once known as "the most trusted man in America," debuts on MTV's "Choose or Lose: Work It," at 10:30 EDT tonight.
According to Newsday, Cronkite will air his opinions in five- or six-minute segments, but both Cronkite and MTV News boss Dave Sirulnick told Newsday they are talking about the possibility of such future assignments as an on-air role during the conventions and Election Night.
If so, it will be his first real election-year TV assignment since the first time Ronald Reagan was elected president, the newspaper noted.
"That'd be interesting certainly," he told Newsday. "How much I participate in the remaining election year is, I think, just kind of up for grabs. They [MTV] know I'm interested in doing pieces for them that come along, but they have some excellent young reporters who will be doing the basic coverage of the campaign. If they call upon me to be the senior citizen, I'll be the senior citizen."
Tonight Cronkite will offer viewers, average age 22, a primer on topics such as outsourcing and whether or how a president's actions can directly affect the job market.
If he does get involved in commenting on the election coverage, MTV's largely adolescent and kiddie audience can expect the aging liberal and bosom buddy of the Clintons to treat them to a lot of Bush-bashing.
Oh, and when asked if he'd ever seen MTV, he ducked the question. "I have no comment on that," he told Newsday.
How the left must long for the pre-internet, pre-FoxNews days when nobody realized how untrustworthy they were.

Walt's fantasy. Rock on. |
MTV would never be interested in Father Time if he weren't obviously a lefty.
Cronkite and Rooney... they don't speak well for old age, do they?
Let me guess. Cronkite will declare this war 'unwinable'.
Sure we could all "lose" if people don't vote to re-elect President Bush but when you see the positions on MTV's Choose Or Lose you realize that they mean "Choose Kerry".
The Kerry Campaign has become unwinable. Their secret weapon, Air America has deflated.
With Cronkite and Rooney still around, the argument for euthanasia is looking better.
I highly disagree...this is probably true of the group I come from, but the 17-21 demo is a pretty involved group. and thankfully, it appears it is a group with more conservative and religious conviction than any that has come along in quite some time. I was born 6 years too early I tells ya.
