From the Indianapolis Star:
Former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz will speak at a fund-raiser for Gov. Joe Kernan's campaign. The coach and the former South Bend mayor have been friends for years. The $300-a-person reception and dinner June 7 will be at the Indianapolis Colts' Union Federal Football Center on West 56th Street.
In the past Holtz has endorsed or campaigned for Republican candidates. He appeared in a commercial for Jesse Helms. Holtz attended an inaugural luncheon for then Attorney General Charlie Condon (a Notre Dame alumnus) in 1999. Holtz also was listed as a supporter of Dan Quayle's presidential bid in 2000 but later asked that his name be removed from a list of endorsements. Holtz also stayed out of the 2000 Confederate flag fight until he caught heat from the NAACP.
Both Holtz and Quayle are represented by the Washington Speakers Bureau. Helms and Quayle both commented on Holtz's book, Winning Every Day.
Helms:
I've known Lou Holtz for a long time as a man of unflinching, unyielding character and integrity. It shows in this remarkable book.
Quayle:
This is the book we've all hoped Lou Holtz would write. In these pages he shares the wisdom and experience of a lifetime. It's a great read, and sure to be a hit.
Getting back to the latest candidate to receive an endorsement from Holtz, Gov. Joe Kernan is being challenged by Mitch Daniels, who resigned as head of the OMB in the Bush administration to run for Governor. Kernan refused to respond to a request from Operation Vote Smart to complete the National Political Awareness Test (NPAT), even after being asked to do so by Geraldine Ferraro and Michael Dukakis (among others.)
Recently, Kernan was disinvited (by instruction of the local Bishop) from speaking at graduation ceremonies at St. Joseph High School in South Bend because of his support for legalized abortion.
Holtz has been under fire recently for being inaccessible to fans. An article about the reasons Arkansas (where Holtz appeared in the Helms commercial wearing Razorback gear) fired Holtz included:
Under questioning Friday by University of Arkansas lawyer Phil Kaplan, Broyles said that when he doesnt believe a coach is performing to the best of his or her ability, he alone determines whether to recommend dismissal.Broyles said that as an example of how he handles coaches, he fired Holtz, then Arkansas head football coach, despite his 60-21-2 record that included six consecutive bowl appearances.
I felt like he was losing the fan base with things he said and did, Broyles said. Among perceived slights was Holtzs missing a homecoming game pep rally so he could make a speech in St. Louis, Broyles said.
Coming off consecutive 5-7 records and a 63-17 loss to Clemson in his fifth season at South Carolina, Holtz has been criticized this week by some USC fans for not spending more time signing autographs at Gamecock Club spring meetings.
Gamecock Club director Jeff Barber said earlier this week that Holtz still signs items that fans bring to meetings, but that Holtz preferred not to set aside a block of time to do so.
Barber said attendance at three of the four club meetings at which Holtz has spoken is down from 2003.
The enthusiasm is absolutely gone, which is all the reason Holtz should have been more accessible, Larry Simmons, the vice president of the Charleston County Gamecock Club, said earlier this week.
Apparently, Holtz can find time to stump for a pro-abortion candidate for Governor in Indiana while snubbing the very people that help pay his salary here in South Carolina and this would appear to be a recurring theme for him throughout his career.
touchdown Jesus hangs his head in remorse
lou holtz really was bloodthirsty both on and off the field
Lou Holtz is a fine man. Some years ago, I saw Holtz attending Mass at the cathedral here in Cleveland on a holy day of obligation that fell during the week--I think All Saints' Day, but I'm not sure. Anyway, he was there at Mass when he was travelling alone in a strange city, on a day when many Catholics can't seem to find their way to their own parishes.
After Mass, I spoke with Holtz and told him my Dad was a huge fan. There was nothing for Holtz to autograph, but I gave him my Dad's name and address. Holtz then went back to his hotel room, autographed something for my Dad, and mailed it to him. There was absolutely nothing arrogant or pretentious about Lou, and, of course, Notre Dame hasn't had a coach of his caliber since he left.
Holtz will be toast after the Gamecocks go 4-8 this year.
He has been friends with Slick Willie since he coached and Arkansas and got sued by the players suspended for the 1977 Orange Bowl for an incident involving a woman. Clinton, as the AG at the time, represented Holtz in the suit.
Clinton later reportedly represented Holtz between Gubernatorial terms for contract negotiations. Holtz and his wife were on the Clinton guest list that was finally released after the Lincoln Bedroom scandals.
Gee....a liberal university employee.....who'd a thunk it? Yes folks, even big time college football coaches have to answer to their liberal collegues in academia.
I am a USC fan and unfortunately think you are right. In any event, LH should be in Columbia worrying about his pathetic football team rather than politicking for some lib demo-rat. Seems ole Lou has time for most everything other than his friggin' job these days.
Bring back Jim Carlin!
Say it isn't so, Granny Clampet.
I actually had high hopes when Tyrone Willingham was signed to a contract, but even he hasn't been able to salvage the disaster left in the wake of Bob Davies' tenure as head coach.
Holtz is one of my favorite coaches, along with Joe Paterno, Terry Bowden-formerly of Auburn, and Pete Carroll.
Just thought everyone mught like to see that once more. :)
Just thought everyone mught like to see that once more. :)
Not to mention that Tommy Bowden also has a deep belief in beating down gamecocks, which he practices on an annual basis in November.
Lou Holtz will burn in hell for bailing out of the Univ of Minnesota's football program back in the mid 80's.
We've never forgiven and we've never forgotten, Lou.
It was also a career mistake for Holtz.
Holtz had good teams only with the remaining Gerry Faust recruits. Faust had the ability to see the best football flesh, but he didn't have the ability to turn them into the best team.
Since then, Holtz has really been nothing. But his big magic was the U of Minn. He made the same dumb mistake that Pitino did at UKentucky.
When the magic hits you don't desert it. It don't generally hit twice.
