1. P. Diddy on the Squirm Beat
You have to admit the guy is versatile. Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is planning to jump from a star role on Broadway in "A Raisin in the Sun" to a star gig as jiggy journalist.
The hip-hopper is set to host a program for MTV with the working title of "Project Change." The show will purportedly introduce the political world to a younger audience.
Combs can't wait to give President Bush and eventual Democrat nominee John Kerry the third degree. He told the New York Post that he'd scour Harlem, Brooklyn and Detroit to find real folks who can give his guests a grilling.
"The people who usually ask the candidates questions are screened, and I'm going to use real people off the streets to get their questions out there," Combs said. "I'm going to make Kerry and Bush squirm." The Left Coast Report wonders if they'll be squirming in their boxers or briefs.
2. Bing Bucks for John Kerry
Steve Bing, one of Hollywood's writer-producers, has participated in Tinseltown tyke production as well, with Liz Hurley and with Lisa Kerkorian. Now he's playing Dem sugar daddy.
Beating out committed billionaire Bush-hating George Soros, who coughed up only $7.8 million, Bing recently gave $8.1 million to groups creating and airing anti-Bush TV ads.
The groups are campaign finance "reform"-dodging 527 committees, named for the IRS code under which they operate.
The committee with the largest cash stash to date, Media Fund, has put more than $24 million into Bush-bashing TV ads nationally since March 2004.
And who's at the helm of Media Fund? Why it's Slick Willie's former deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes. The Left Coast Report can just imagine what kind of campaign finance rule-bending the Dems will try next - a Frank Lautenberg substitution, a nomination stall-off or a Buddhist nun telethon?
3. Judge Slaps Down Non-environmental Yentl
Democrat activist and alleged environmentalist Barbra Streisand sued environmental photographer Ken Adelman for $10 million because, in an attempt to document coastal erosion, he included on his Web site two photographs of her Malibu home.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Allan Goodman ruled that the pictures did not violate Streisand's privacy and ordered Babs to pay the defendant's legal fees. According to Adelman's lawyer, Richard Kendall, the parties were ordered by the court to settle on the amount of the legal fees, but Streisand simply refused to pay any amount.
Forced to return to the court, Adelman asked the judge to make the reluctant performer square up. The judge ultimately ordered Streisand to pay $154,000 in attorney fees. Adelman has now moved on. He's continuing his environmental project and has another photo flight scheduled for the fall, Babs' objections notwithstanding.
He tells me that time has already run out for Streisand to file an appeal on the main case, and he hasn't heard whether the Democrat diva intends to appeal the order on the legal fees.
The Left Coast Report suspects that the amount of the attorney fees might be comparable to the tab for Streisand's spelling tutor.
4. Renegade Chic Lara Flynn Boyle
Every now and then we see a Tinseltowner who's willing to buck the liberal trend.
Hollywood's newest nonconformist is a former star of "The Practice," Lara Flynn Boyle.
The actress has stepped forward to pledge her support for the current object of Hollywood's disaffection, President Bush.
Boyle has been busy since the cancellation of "The Practice" working on a recurring role in a new Showtime drama called "Huff." She portrays a manic-depressive patient of the title character. Showtime plans to debut the series in November.
"I'm Irish Catholic, so a Democrat by blood. But I'm 100 percent for Bush. I want my president to be like my agent: not afraid of people, but wants my best interest," Boyle told World Entertainment News Network. The Left Coast Report thinks Boyle's agent might hail from a red state.
5. Moore Conspiracy Theories
Michael Moore has become a GM-sized conspiracy theory factory.
The fake-umentary maker recently suggested that Democrat donor Michael Eisner was conspiring with the Bush brothers to censor his latest film, "Fahrenheit 9/11." In the movie, which recently took the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Moore presents a conspiracy theory that involves Osama bin Laden, al-Qaida, the Saudis and the Bush administration. He bases the crackpot thesis on the news reports that, in the days after 9/11, about 140 Saudis were airlifted back home, two dozen of whom were members of the bin Laden family.
Lost in Moore's mental machinations were the facts that Osama was estranged from his elephant-sized family and had had his Saudi citizenship revoked two decades ago. If he's looking for real conspiracy fodder, Moore might try checking out some of the new folks that Miramax Films has hired to promote his flick. Howard Wolfson is the ex-campaign press secretary for Sen. Hillary Clinton. Michael Feldman is an adviser from Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign. Mark Fabiani and Chris Lehane are former Clinton White House advisers. And then there's the Miramax spokesman who's been talking to the press about the story. He's Matthew Hiltzik, and he worked on Hillary's U.S. Senate campaign.
The Left Coast Report whispers, Vast left-wing conspiracy, anyone?
Lara Flynn Boyle PING!!!
Credit where credit is due. Send her a note of encouragement, I don't know her agent's address.
