The Catholic hierarchy is very anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian. The Pope has a good opinion of Arafat and, indeed, met with Tariq Aziz, Saddam's minister, before OP Iraqi Freedom.
Tariq Aziz is a member of the Chaldean Catholic church -- one of those ancient churchs that survived away from the mother church under oppressive rule -- like the church in china.
