I have to hand it to President Bush. What better way to show the bias of ABC, CBS, NBC,and CNN. All these networks have done is bash President Bush for what seems like forever but has elected not to show the President speech to their viewers this evening. I wonder what their viewers think of this...
I have come here tonight to report to all Americans, and to the Iraqi people, on the strategy our Nation is pursuing in Iraq, and the specific steps we are taking to achieve our goals
Americas task in Iraq is not only to defeat an enemy, it is to give strength to a friend a free, representative government that serves its people and fights on their behalf. And the sooner this goal is achieved, the sooner our job will be done.
There are five steps in our plan to help Iraq achieve democracy and freedom. We will hand over authority to a sovereign Iraqi government
help establish security
continue rebuilding Iraqs infrastructure
encourage more international support
and move toward a national election that will bring forward new leaders empowered by the Iraqi people.
History is moving, and it will tend toward hope, or tend toward tragedy. Our terrorist enemies have a vision that guides and explains all their varied acts of murder
Our actions, too, are guided by a vision. We believe that freedom can advance and change lives in the Greater Middle East, as it has advanced and changed lives in Asia, and Latin America, and Eastern Europe, and Africa
These two visions have now met in Iraq, and are contending for the future of that country
We will persevere, and defeat this enemy, and hold this hard-won ground for the realm of liberty.

How wonderful that Iraq is breaking out into a free society, helped by the US...
and President George Bush!
Very good days ahead.
"We will not fail. We will persevere and defeat this enemy."
I pray to G-d it helps, in the weeks and months of non-stop media onslaught ahead.
And of course the first thing CNN says after the speech:
Bush's poll numbers are DOWN!
He did not give a date for troop withdrawl!
There is nothing new in this speech!
sarcasm off
Maybe the networks prefer keeping the circus for the unwashed masses.
Fire the committee of idiots who wrote the SOTU. He should have given this speech in January. I was happy to hear that he made it clear that the Iraqi elections could happen earlier with his approval. If they go off in September and the results are favorable, that will be a real boost for Bush. It will be a tangible sign that there's a light at the end of the table. It was also very good to hear him admit that they made mistakes-- like setting up and leading the Iraqi army, and have put in place a plan to make things right. It's helpful politically to have him acknowledge the problems voters have seen show up and show that he's addressing them.
CSPAN is having call in. Caller talking about American imperialism in Iraq. CSPAN Call In is always left-leaning.
I didn't make any pre-speech comments on your thread, but I read all posts. I have to admit that I was pessimistic prior to the speech, thinking it was a no-win situation -- what could he say? But I was pleasantly surprised. I was particularly glad to see the President "put the ball back in the court" of the terrorists, by reciting the recent atrocities. He didn't exactly say that our prison indiscretions paled in comparison to the terrorists' actions, but the message came through loud and clear.
His emphasis on the role the Iraqi people must take -- it is, after all, their country -- was appropriate and well-stated.
Tough, tough situation. No way this was going to be a "feel good" speech. But under the circumstances, very well done, indeed.
Chris Matthews on MSNBC has no understanding. He is worried about our losing 50 troops a month.
Yes, that is bad, but Chris, we are in a major war.
[Chris is clueless as to what this war means and what it is going to take to win it.]
I believe it was Krauthammer that said the speech succeeded to the extent that it was intended to. I agree. I don't believe this was meant to be a both-barreled, roll-em-out-and-kick-their-a$$ speech, nor was it designed to be. But it got the job done.
Oh lookie, Dick Morris. What new and exciting prediction could he have now?
