The judiciary 'deal': Spineless Republicans
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Sunday, May 23, 2004 | editorial

Republicans were handed the perfect opportunity to lead last week. They ran instead. Then they claimed victory. Is this a grand old party or what?

Senate Democrats have spent the last four years thumbing their noses at the Constitution. Instead of offering its "advice and consent" on judicial nominees, the minority party has employed parliamentary tactics to deny floor votes and the certain will of the majority.

But Senate Republicans are not without culpability. They repeatedly have shown deference to this band of political picaroons. Despite weak threats, the GOP has refused to use the simple majority it holds to modernize the rules of engagement that would prevent such obstructionism.

Adding insult to inaction, the White House cut a "deal" on Wednesday....

They're all in cahoots to maintain the status-quo and pull the wool over the eyes of the American People.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The problem is that, these days, the difference between the two ruling parties is far less than most believe. For the public eye, they put on a good show of disdain and animosity towards each other. But behind the scenes, they are partying together and collaborating on ways to further their combined elite status and power over the little people.

The Republicans don't do anything of substance to combat the Constitutional violations of the Democrats because they don't WANT to. Either they see the Democan actions as something that they too can benefit from (either now or in the future), or the Republicrats simply are offering the Dems a concession in exchange for some power grab that the GOP wishes to implement.

That is why, under a Republican President *and* a Republican Congress, we have had tremendous growth in government, and continuation, growth, and creation of new Socialist policies, including:

America has lost control of its government.

You got it. Agreed 100%. That's one reason I dont even bother debating with leftists. we already know who and what they are, the filth they stand for. The thing that gets me is, most repubs now stand for the exact same thing and yet the mesmerized masses lick their boots.

... amazing. Absolutely amazing to watch.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not. My questioning response was offered because I don't know what the GOP has to gain by letting the Democrats run roughshod over them like this. What is supposed to be in it for them? "Maintaining the status quo" appropriate of nothing discernible is a feeble answer to that question.

Can you say "term limits"? I knew you could! Politics as a career should be made impossible. Public service should be just that- SERVICE!

Oh, come on. Don't insult the intelligence of everyone reading this with bumper-sticker "answers."

Very feeble but it fits in with the general theme in some crowds.

To me the reason is extremely simple, there REMAINS a leadership problem in both the House and Senate; same problem that's been there for years now.

The Republicans act like they still don't realize they are the majority, whereas the Democrats learned how to be the minority, effectively, overnight.

The Republicans in Congress are never going to hold sway until they put people into the leadership positions who will LEAD.

It's not an insult.
Bumper stickers are an honest form of communication that usually display more wisdom than the average politician.

Ask any California conservative what term limits have done to change the continuing flow of socialism from the state Legislature other than change the names of the pols from which it endlessly spews.

Term limits are a cap gun of a weapon against thwarting the effect of constantly re-elected career politicians. The politicians are only the symptom; liberalism is the disease, and each termed-out Demo anoints an easily-elected clone to do the same s/he did, or even worse.

For example: Former State Senator, State Assemblyman, and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, California's ultimate political gamesman, never did anything as nakedly radical as supposed "moderate" Gavin Newsom's bird-flip to the 61% of California voters that approved the clear definition of marriage as male-female.

Does anybody hae a CLUE to what's going on with these Pubbies in the Senate? (...and now the PRES. for crying out loud???!!!)

It appears to me that they never HAVE played 'hardball' with the Dems on the Judicial nominations ...that they booted the Memo-gate opportunity TOTALLY (...and even managed to turn it into a LIABILITY, for crying out loud!!!) ...and NOW they've cut this weak-sister "DEAL" with the Daschle Dems???

Have they totally lost their (our) way? (...lost sight of their PROMISES???) or ...are they just REALLY THAT INEPT? or ...do they think we're STUPID(...and are we, for supporting them?) ...or do they actually have some (secret?)"Grand Plan" which will, SOMEHOW, SOMEDAY, make EVERYTHING come out okay in the end???? (Yeah, yeah, idealistic me.) ...or is it 'game over' time...?

PLEASE, I am drowning here... Yes, YOU deep-thinkers out there, you 'intellectual elite'... Does ANYONE have a CLUE???

Willie,

Where is the advantage in making a recess appointment for seven months v having 20 or so district and appellate judges confirmed for life?

And what does Bush lose by giving up recess appointments for seven months, which of course will be a timespan that decreases daily?
