A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain Safety Equipment required by State and the Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the United States Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater.

This is not boarding or a law enforcement issue. No citations will be given as a result of this encounter. We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal. This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a positive encounter.

Last time I had anything ot do with a recreational watercraft, there was chaos and terror, someone rapping dementedly on a coleman cooler as if they were in the movie Ben Hur, and the statement "Away Boarders!" thrown about.
But we did have lifejackets, and we didn't truly board anyone's boat.
Though we were invited to do so.

Actually kayaks are inspected and if they pass they get a decal.

How'd you know I'm rebuilding a 22' Sea Ray Cuddy Cabin Cruiser with a 350 Merc? I should be done in a month if all goes well.

We just try to prevent tragic accidents at sea.
There is no cost and no tickets issued.

Most boat 'accidents' in this part of the country have nothing to do with equipment or lack thereof. Almost all are caused by alcohol, although a few are caused by other drugs.

I got one of them last year at Lake Powell on my bayliner and hurt the inspectors partner ears bad.

when they had me honk the horn i forgot to tell them i have a compressor in the engine compartment to two Peterbilt polished aluminium air tanks hooked to the TRAIN HORNS!

got my sticker and had 10 people checking out my trucking toys i adapted to the cruiser!

took another 1.5 hours before i got to the water and a ranger boat came along side to check them out later, cause he wanted put some on his boat!

My boat would never pass: I REFUSE to put a MARPOL "prohibited discharge" plaque anywhere on her. NEVER!

I'm just a rebel.

The true definition of a "boat" is this: A hole in the water that one throws copious amounts of money into.

Anchors Aweigh!!

Another reminder of the days of my mispent youth. While not a coast guard, I worked one summer for the state of Oklahoma as a waterways patrolman, ie, highway patrolman in a boat. This was the summer of 68 BTW.

I had a quota of pre-launch and underway safety inspections to perform each week. Let me assure you, four bikini clad blondes in a ski boat got a safety inspection.

Best summer job I had in college.
