Ehrlich rejects calls for apology over remarks (MD's Gov. calls multiculturalism "crap" and "bunk")

ANNAPOLIS -- Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. rejected calls to apologize for his remarks last week describing multiculturalism as "crap" and "bunk."

Ehrlich defended his comments on talk radio as "common sense" and declined to apologize Tuesday.

"We celebrate our ethnicities quite appropriately," he said, noting that he was once named "German of the Year" for Maryland. But he said multiculturalism, which he defined as separating people into different groups, was wrong.

"In America we have a singular culture, common values and a common language," he said. "It's a common history, it's a common culture. ... We should not separate ourselves. This is a melting pot society. ... I think we need to get back to our roots, which is to celebrate the melting pot."

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously passed a resolution expressing "deep concern" over the governor's "ill-chosen remarks."

"The County Council suggests to Governor Ehrlich the phrase 'I'm sorry' as appropriate to the occasion," according to the resolution.

However, the council did not seek a similar apology from Comptroller William Donald Schaefer (D), who sparked the brouhaha at last week's Board of Public Works meeting.

"German of the Year"

Sounds as if he's got a pretty good dollop of H.L. Mencken in his personality.

Could it be we are seeing the beginning of a movement that is tired of the continual kissing of backsides to justify the fact that we may have been born other than the preferred ethnic groups at this point in America?

"Multiculturism" has become a code word for "gimme".

Put 100 people in a courtyard, a mixture of all ethnic varieties, and within an hour they will all migrate into groups of like ethnic origins. We can't help it...it's human nature to feel more comfortable around people who are most like ourselves...and it always will be.

It would be nice if some of the junk scientists would leave "global warming" alone for a while, and study this phenomenom (actually it wouldn't take a scientist, just someone who has vision and common sense).

Case in point, I have known and worked with many different ethnic groups...but the whole time you have to be on guard that you don't say, or do, anything that might offend them...and in today's atmosphere, it doesn't take much. If I left my house everyday looking for something to offend me, I'm sure I could find a few before I even left my driveway.

If you follow the historical timeline, since this big movement for "multiculturism", the morality and quality of life in America has gone down hill. Reminds me of two cats...you push them together, and they're gonna fight. Leave them along and treat them equally, they might learn to get along...even have kittens.

The government is not "promoting" multiculturism by redistributing the wealth, land grabs, forced busing, and publishing all things in multiple languages, but are causing resentment, uneasiness, and ...yes...hatred. "Immigrants" who have spent most of their lives here, paid their taxes, learned the language, worked hard, and in many cases, attained their citizenship...but now it's turned into one, big, giveaway program; a welfare-for-votes program, sponsored by the liberals.

However, if the acceptance of "multiculturism" includes handing them the key to the pantry and the ATM card, forget it. Those of us who are boomers, in most cases, have spent our lifetime earning what little we have, and now the (liberal) government expects us to give it all up to support thugs coming here for the free ride.

Take away the ride, and you'll solve immigration...plain and simple.

You hang in there Gov...I've with you on this one.

An apology to these hyenas now is like an admission of heresy before the inquisitor-general and will only lead to the "heretic" being burned at the stake.

Sounds like this governor understands this, at least, if his party hasn't quite figured it out. Apologies are becoming the republican party's stock & trade.

OK the resolution was unanimous. But was there discussion on whether to expess "concern", "mild concern", "deep concern", "extreme concern"? Enquiring minds want to know.

sorry he's an idiot.... that's a good one i will be repeating...

ehrlich is a breath of fresh air, but he still backs the environmental wackos over property owners and is now asking for a toilet tax to fix waste water treatment plants, even from those on septic systems...

he is right on about multi culturalism being the down fall of any society, but a better point would be made by trying to pass a law in spanish and russian and german instead of english. although lawyer jargon is far worse than spanish...

us few dreamers in maryland have visions of her returning to her free state status...

we can dream... so far they haven't been able to tax that yet...

"we can dream... so far they haven't been able to tax that yet... "

Where there is anything left untaxed, somewhere there is a democRAT that will find a way to tax it. Give it time.

This Hillary clone senator we have never met a tax she didn't like. Our guy won the 3 way primary by a significant margin and Arkansas FReepers are thrilled. It would be wonderful to see him topple Blanche Lincoln from her comfortable little RAT throne.

Meet Jim Holt - Arkansas Senate Candidate

"Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp (D), who sits on the Board of Public Works with Schaefer and Ehrlich, said that the remarks by both were "very unfortunate."

"I'm not sure what 'multiculturalism' means, but I do believe that America's strength is its diversity."

Kopp said she could understand Schaefer's frustration with not being able to communicate with someone, but "to move from that frustration to a general conclusion that sounds like it's anti-immigrant, that's not William Donald Schaefer."

Sounds like the stupid (ahem) Witch was the one that jumped to a general conclusion. Who said anything about "anti-immigrant"?

Speaking of Donald Shaeffer, how's that outhouse of an eastern shore coming along? ;-)
