Plans to destroy the prision where Iraqi detainees were 'humiliated' and 'abused' took a small step forward Thursday as lawmakers voted to include it in a multimillion dollar defense bill.
The plan by Pennsylvania Reps. Curt Weldon a Republican, and John P. Murtha a Democrat would demolish the Abu Ghraib prision and build a modernized detention facility in its place.
It was slipped into a $422 billion defense authorization bill that the House approved Thursday.
The proposal drew an immediate rebuke from one lawmaker Wednesday during a short debate on the House floor.
Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said destroying the prision is the 'sovereign Iraqis' decision to make. 'It is not ours to insist upon or suggest but only to abide.'
Weldon responding, noted that the demolition plans calls of the consent of the new Iraqi government, since 'by the time this bill passes, they will be in charge.'

From that perspective, I agree.
OK, you don't believe in evil.
Don't sweat it. Evil believes in you, and that's more than enough.
So they want to tear this prison down and that means, guess what? We have to build another one using U.S. tax dollars. God knows what depravity went on in the oval office when Clinton was there but we're not tearing down the white house.
I don't disagree with you, but as to the issue of destroying this prison now, doesn't it seem analogous to the Congress taking a shower because they "feel dirty" in light of the recent "abuse" -- NOT because of Saddam's past evils?
Dims only have eyes in their A$$. Hindsight and Rats go togather.
Last I heard, the facility is the property of the Iraqi state. And it is up to the people of Iraq to determine exactly what it is they want to do with their property.
Yes, I know, but I'm perfectly content with the U.S. doing it as a symbol of our intentions. It's easy to criticize symbolism as being 'just' symbolism, but there's a reason why symbolism was invented.....
The article says there's a plan in the works to put a modernized detention facility in its place.
At the moment, everything in Iraq is 'ours' under international law..
Speaking from a spiritual warfare perspective...
Ever consider the possibility that the recently-exposed escapades were a byproduct of the evil that settled into place and got all comfy? All those malign spirits, camped out, looking for morally weak folks to influence...my first thought when I heard about this was that this was straight out of a Stephen King novel.
I don't care about the timing, except to say "better late than never."
Then they'd better take a tanker truck full of holy water and have an exorcism before they start building the new prison...
Haunted?
Could be.
Lets destroy the White Hosue while we're at it. That way I can put the image of President Clinton getting a blowjob from the lovely Monica while discussing troop movements with Rep Sonny Callahan on the telephone.
At Abu Ghraib, the evil people were the ones running it. And the evil they did lives on after them.
It's not the building; it's the evil spirits resident in the building.
If the new Iraqi government builds a new prison, they need to hold an exorcism first.
Since they started building roads and forts.
Yes, ignorance and superstition.
This is no different than removing Confederate flags and symbols, apologizing for slavery, racism, sexism, homophobia and all the ills that infest human relations. It makes us feel better but does nothing for the victims past and present.
This is like a bugle burning down your house in apology for robbing it.
I would bet good money that ignorance and superstition are quite entrenched amongst the Iraqi people. It is ignorance and superstition that is driving the forces killing our troops, and it will be appeals to ignorance and superstition that form a significant part of the ultimate resolution..
Are you and the U.S. Congress out of your everlovin' minds?
Abu Ghraib is a massive crime scene. It constitutes evidence of the horrific crimes committed upon the Iraqi populace by Sadam and his Baathist thugs. If we ever bring them to trial, we are going to need Abu Ghraib!
Or...are you one of those sheeple who thinks the FBI behaved properly in bulldozing the Branch Davidian (Waco) compound before the ashes were cold?
Sumbolism over substance -- how very liberal...
