Arafat accused of approving attacks on Israel

May 20 2004 at 01:15PM

Tel Aviv - An Israeli court that convicted Marwan Barghouthi of murder on Thursday said the Palestinian uprising leader's orders for attacks on Israelis were sometimes "based on instructions" from President Yasser Arafat.

"Arafat would never give explicit instructions for attacks but he let it be known when the timing was right," the judges said in a verdict read out in a Tel Aviv courtroom.

"He made sure his subordinates understood very well when he was interested in a ceasefire and when he was interested in terror attacks against Israel," the verdict said.

"These are unfounded and baseless allegations," said Nabil Abu Rdainah, a senior adviser to Arafat. "This is a pretext to continue Israel's escalation and threats" against Arafat.

'Arafat would never give explicit instructions for attacks' Israel accuses Arafat, a 75-year-old former guerrilla leader, of having fomented suicide bombings and ambush attacks by militant groups in the course of a 3 1/2-year-old uprising. He has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Justice Minister Yosef Lapid said Israel might consider putting Arafat on trial "one of these days". Arafat has been largely confined to his half-demolished West Bank compound by Israeli forces since 2001.

This is not new to anyone with a brain. They should have hit this animal years ago and there is no good reason not to do it today.

But, but, Arafat won the Nobel prize for peace.

You expect me to believe that they gave the Nobel prize to a guy who encourages attacks against civilians to further a political cause? The Norwegian Nobel Committee would have to be a group of idiots to award a terrorist.

Oh wait...

The most blood soaked creature in the world, the fact he's still alive amazes me.

I'm with you - why is he still alive? If what goes around comes around he should be dead many times over by now.

A 2.54" missile, up his bee hind, might give him some FOD per thought since his brain would have been targeted!
