Nearly 100 million PCs are likely to be replaced this year, with 120 million being swapped out in 2005, according to data research firm Gartner released Thursday. The volume of replacements in the next two years will surpass the number of units replaced in the run-up to Y2K in 1998 and 1999, Gartner said. In 2004, replacement units will drive global shipments to 186.4 million--an increase of 13.6 percent over 2003.
"Our first-quarter results suggest the...replacement cycle that vendors have been anticipating for more than a year is under way," George Shiffler, principal analyst for Gartner's client platforms research, said in a statement.

replacement cycle that vendors have been anticipating for more than a year is under way Ehhh... it's become less and less of an improvement of performance.
Afterall, does it REALLY matter if your applications open in .5 seconds as opposed to .7?

Buy HP, Buy Dell! Buy Buy Buy!!!

A lot of machines are leased. Those would be switched out automatically. The machines passed the performance threshhold years ago, so further improvements aren't really necessary, but an older machine would be dusty and full of carpet lint and apt to fail completely at any time.

Here's a chance for Apple to break the 3% threshold.

Nah. If anything, it's going to dilute its share.

"Afterall, does it REALLY matter if your applications open in .5 seconds as opposed to .7?"Take it from someone 20+ years in the biz........it has little to nothing to do with that.
Let's talk supportability. Let's talk upgradeability.

Linux is not targeted at the consumer or even desktop by the overwhelming majority of the Linux community, and you full well know it.
I've shot you down so many times I'm a triple ace on this subject with you, and you still insist on these asinine posts. Give it up. You've run into far too many.......including me...........who know what the hell they're talking about.

Small businesses aren't going to upgrade until the PC breaks.
Most of the new PCs are gonna be white box units.
To get out of virus hell you just load up an old box with a Linux desktop. Takes care of the bloatware problem as well.
BTW, has Gartner ever been right about anything? Geeze I remember when they were pedaling the 'Itanic is going to rule the world'.
Yawn.

Have you checked out the price of a new PC lately?
The old ones we have at work are very slow. We can pick up a new box for $400-600 that is 3-4x faster and has XP.

My current computer is six years old (PII, 400Mhz, 96MB RAM, 12GB HD, running Win 98). I'm buying a new one on Monday from a guy who builds them and sells them cheap.

Yawn away, you two. Spend some time in the sales end of the industry. For decades. Then come talk to me. What is it about computers that makes everyone think they're a go**amned expert...........unbelievable.
To: Pikachu_Dad
Yep, I have. Just got two new AMD 3000+, 512mb, 160Gb hp boxes for a client, $299 each on sale. Just installed a Dell 2.4 GHz P4 400SC for another client. Box cost $323 before I upgraded the disk and memory.
A PC with a 600mhz P3-512 PC runs RH Linux 9 just fine and cost $0 for the software.
Small businesses don't spend money unless they absolutely have to. Right now these businesses are overwhelmed with virus and spam concerns.

Take it from someone 20+ years in the biz........it has little to nothing to do with that. I work in the field as well, and a two year old comp with a memory upgrade will serve most users just fine.
If you are a 1st person gamer - perhaps you need a 3GHz with 1024meg memory, and 256meg AGP card - but that ain't most folks.
