AMMAN (AFP) - A Jordanian border policeman opened fire at the King Hussein bridge crossing between Jordan and the West Bank, causing no injuries, Jordanian government spokeswoman Asma Khodr said.

"A bullet was fired by a Jordanian policeman but no one was injured and an investigation is underway to determine what happened exactly," Khodr told AFP.

Khodr said she was unable to give further details pending the results of the investigation.

Her remarks came after Israel's Channel Two television reported that a Jordanian policeman opened fire towards an Israeli delegation waiting at the King Hussein bridge, otherwise known as Allenby.

The station quoted members of the delegation, academics returning from a conference in Jordan, that the officer opened fire in the terminal building as they were waiting for their passports to be checked.

The policeman fired one bullet before his gun jammed and he was subdued by other officers. Jordanian soldiers then took control of the post and the Israelis crossed the border, according to the television report.

Israel and Jordan have been bound by a peace treaty since 1994

Hmmm ... wasn't it a Jordanian police officer in Kosovo who shot and killed fellow peace-keeping officers a couple weeks ago?
