Former Rep. John Cooksey, R-LA, will not seek to unseat Rep. Rodney Alexander, D-LA, in the Nov. 2 primary, confirmed Lee Fletcher, Cooksey's former staff aide, on Wednesday.
Fletcher himself was the Republican nominee in 2002 for the seat Alexander won after Cooksey entered the U.S. Senate primary for the seat still held by Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-LA. Cooksey ran a weak third in the senatorial primary.
Fletcher suggested that he may run again in 2004.
Former Rep. Clyde Holloway, R-LA (1987-1993), a Forest Hill nurseryman, who was overwhelmingly defeated in 2003 in a race for Louisiana lieutenant governor, indicated he will run again for Congress if he determines that the numbers are there for him to prevail. Holloway noted that he would start a new House race with high name identification.
State Sen. Robert Barham, R-Oak Ridge, said that he will run only if the state and national GOP endorse him and raise $1 million in startup campaign funds. Party leaders had been waiting on Cooksey's decision and were said to support him had he sought to reclaim his former seat.
The Third District in question covers the northeast quadrant of Louisiana, including the cities of Alexandria and Monroe.
LA continues to disappoint me and probably will in 04 as well
they did not get Terrell in for Senate
They did not elect Jindahl for Governor
now supposedly polls show Kerry neck and neck with Bush
very disconcerting indeed
I thought JIndahl was a big favorite in his congressional race..
"I live in LA and it has been a disappointing few years. I see a dim future for the Republican party here."
oh just wonderful
why is this? Bush defeated Gore there quite handily how much has change in 4 years?
I have the view that many of Louisiana's Republicans have moved to TX and therefore swelled that state's now majority GOP voter base, leaving the Louisiana electorate some 66 percent Democrat in the process. Many of the LA Democrats are true believers too. And Governor Blanco has very high popularity ratings, as do Senators Breaux and Landrieu. All of these popular politicians have bought into the Kerry campaign for weeks.
oh great
i am not liking what i am hearing in LA and OH lately
This is the district in Northeast LA; Jindal is running in the Orleans Parish suburbs in a district that has been continuously Republican since a special election in the summer of 1977.
Not to worry about the GOP in La.
Bobby running at 65%
Vitter has not cranked up yet.
Blanco is NOT all that popular.
Tauzan's seat will be safe as his son is running in his place.
John Breaux will not help Kerry at all.
Bush will win hands down.
Bush to speak at LSU tomorrow. Expecting 8,000 just to watch AF1 Land at BTR!
