Author's Note: Because it quotes everyday campus life at UNC-Greensboro, this editorial contains extremely offensive language. If you read it anyway, and still write to complain, you might be a Democrat.
The other day, I got a call from a freelance reporter wanting me to comment on a recent controversy I helped to start at UNC-Greensboro (UNCG). I declined the interview because I have been busy promoting my new book and trying to start some more controversies to help me get started on a second book.
Interestingly, the reporter kept calling and sending emails after I declined an interview, insisting that it would not be fair to print his article without getting "(my) side of the story." For those who don't know, that meant he was threatening to give me negative press unless I gave him an interview.
In the midst of his unsuccessful attempt to get me to grant an interview, the reporter tipped me off to the fact that some people at UNCG are unwilling to let a controversy die that began when the school paid $3000 in student fees to have a porn star give a lecture on "sexual health." After I wrote an article criticizing that decision, I came under fire from many people, including Bruce Michaels, the Director of UNCG's Office of Student Life.
Relying on numerous reports from people who spoke to Michaels and from comments he made in news interviews, I learned that Bruce was accusing me of lying in my coverage of the recent UNCG controversy. Here's one news excerpt dealing with the negative PR that UNCG experienced after my column about the porn star, oops, I mean, sexual health expert:
"The letters, calls and complaints were mostly from people who were misinformed, because of Mike Adams' column" said Michaels. "The only fact in Mike Adams' column was that Tristan Taormino spoke here. Almost everything else was completely inaccurate."

Let's help Mike find articles on "abstinence" in the Carolinianonline.com (and send a message that abstinence is important for young people to practice). Click on the link below (several times a day, all summer long).

"My personal favorite (sex toy) products at Babeland are anal sex guru Tristan Taormino's signature butt plug and the authentic Hello Kitty vibrator (and you thought it was just an urban legend)."
"I think straight people in general are getting more queer and that's due in large part to the people they are getting sex advice from. The most popular sex writers and sex advice columnists in the country are queer. Every week, queers like Dan Savage and Tristan Taormino counsel straight people on their sexual woes. Books like 'Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men' and 'Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man' have straight people queering their sex lives as well. And in private, straight girls get bl**job tips from their gay boyfriends.
So come on straight America. Join the party."
"Each dungeon was set up for a different kink. There was a room for electricity play, one for hot wax, and several where people were tied up. Two of the rooms had elaborate 'crucifixes' to tie people up and then whip, smack, slap, and spank them. There was also a 'sucker bed,' which consisted of two huge sheets of latex and a vacuum cleaner. The idea is you get between the sheets and all the air was sucked out so that you're completely trapped. There is a hose for you to breathe through while people beat, tickle, or fondle you. It's kind of like being in a full body condom.
Each room had its own soundtrack. One dude rocked out to Ramstein while flogging his girlfriend, and just next door the soothing sounds of Enya were accompanied by the 'oohs' and 'ahhs' of a girl having hot wax poured onto her breasts
As we wandered in and out of the dungeons, Tristan answered my questions with the knowledge and patience of a seasoned sexologist.
'What are they doing to that woman?'
'Zapping her with low voltage electricity. It feels like running into a bug- zapper.'"
"[ I ] noticed that the guy to my right had finished peeing" and was "stretching and jiggling his willy [which] really got me going."After all this reading about sex, I decided to do a search for the word "abstinence" on the school newspaper's website. No luck there. But plenty of articles popped up when I did a search for "anal sex." Here's a great excerpt:
"Not only was it my first threesome, but also my first sexual experience with a woman. There were all these different body parts to explore, different smells, tastes, sensations."Well, that's it, my decision is final. I'm sending my kids to UNCG where they can read a lot about anal sex, sex toys, and S&M parties, rather than hearing about topics like abstinence. Most of all, they can be right there in close contact with UNCG's Office of Student Life, led by Bruce Michaels.

If you are one of the people that called Bruce (Almighty) Michaels, would you be so kind as to share your conversation with us?
It strikes me that the difference between porn star and pornographer is a significant one. This Tristan woman is not some hardbody on a set...she is a pornographer attacking our culture. She is the driving force behind the creation and acceptability of pornagraphy, not just an actor in it.
Makes me more proud of North Carolina's flagship university, UNC-Charlotte!

If college has denigrated itself to this level, what will it be like when my kids are ready? My kids will be in college in the next 10 years.
The Women's Resource Center(1625 Soring near UNC-G used to be our fraternity house.
Of course, it was the Women's Resource Center when we lived there too.
Perhaps we need to demand that the state provide at least one campus that is a "Porn Free" zone.

The Siege of Adam & Eve
How an Orange County novelty company fought the federal government and helped make the world safe for sex toys
B Y J E N N I F E R S T R O M
Fifteen years ago last week, the U.S. Department of Justice tried to swallow Phil Harvey whole. Backed by the Reagan administration's Meese Commission, prosecutors declared him a peddler of obscenity. On May 29, 1986, 37 officers invaded his Orange County adult novelty company, Adam & Eve, in a surprise raid. June 6, 2001

But Harvey, armed with a strong belief in the First Amendment, a stubborn streak, and the backing of loyal employees, slowly pried the monster's jaws open, climbed out and went about his successful business--but not before teaching Uncle Sam to think twice about his tactics next time.
Today, Harvey's 30-year-old company thrives in Hillsborough. Every day, employees ship more than 15,000 boxes of sexually oriented merchandise across the country. Adam & Eve and its parent company, Phil Harvey Enterprises, Inc. (PHE) have grown to include Internet sales, a wholesale branch, three retail stores and at-home parties a la Tupperware. PHE doesn't sell Tupperware, though. It sells X-rated videos, lingerie, vibrators and other merchandise that people don't generally discuss in public. Still, 1.5 million customers bought $66 million worth of PHE merchandise last year.

(HILLSBOROUGH, NC) -- Columnist, author, and director Tristan Taormino will be making a return visit to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as a guest of the student body to discuss her life as a feminist pornographer. The lecture will be sponsored by Adam & Eve, the leader in the distribution of sexual products, services, and health information. The lecture will take place on the campus on April 21, 2004 at 7:00 pm.
This past February, Taormino traveled to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) to give a lecture called "Sexploration," as part of the university's "Sexual Responsibility Week." Taormino spoke to the students about sexual anatomy, communication, masturbation, and safer sex.
An associate professor from UNC-Wilmington, a neighboring university, heard of Taormino's visit and wrote two columns about the lecture, attacking Taormino's credibility and chastising the University for bringing a "porn star" to speak at UNCG. "North Carolina taxpayers actually paid to promote pornography and anal sex in the name of 'wellness' and 'diversity,'" said the professor. The column led to two statements by the University Chancellor Patricia Sullivan, where she claimed that officials didn't know about the background of Taormino. The initial statement from the Chancellor said the following: "Had we more thoroughly investigated Ms. Taormino, I do not believe we would have invited her to appear."
Several days after the release of the initial statement, the Chancellor issued a corrected statement where she apologized for her previous remarks and said that University administrators did in fact know about Taormino's involvement in pornography and that they still asked Tristan to appear at the University. In her mea culpa, Chancellor Sullivan still maintained her anti-porn stance: "I am not comfortable with Ms. Taormino's pornographic associations and her website, and I do not think it is good for the reputation and image of UNCG to be associated with the promotion of pornography, directly or indirectly."
The Chancellor's statements and the subsequent news coverage about Tristan's visit generated a heated debate on the UNCG campus. A group of students, including senior Joe Killian, editor in chief of the student paper the Carolinian, has invited Taormino back - this time, to give her talk entitled "My Life as a Feminist Pornographer." when Killian attempted to secure funding from various academic departments and student groups for this lecture, he ran into resistance. "Everybody that I approached has been hesitant to lend their support in a public way. They worry that there will be negative repercussions from the administration. Chancellor Sullivan's statement about 'exercising good judgment when choosing speakers' seems to have scared people off," says Killian. Undeterred, Killian and fellow senior John Russell decided to hold a fundraiser of their own to raise money for Tristan's appearance. It will be held Saturday, April 3 at 8:00 pm at Phases (329 S. Tate Street) in Greensboro, and feature a raffle as well as entertainment by local performers including the band the Green People.
Upon word of this lecture and fundraiser, Adam & Eve, based out of Hillsborough, North Carolina, has announced they will match all funding brought in by the students to make sure Taormino is able to speak at the University. "Once we were given the information behind this upcoming event, we knew we wanted to be a part of this. The opportunity to speak directly to college students about sexuality is important to all of us at Adam & Eve," says Katy Zvolerin, Director of Public Relations for Adam & Eve. "It is also extremely important to discuss how and why businesses within the adult industry, like Adam & Eve, are not degrading or exploiting women, as certain elements would like the public to believe."
Tristan Taormino is the sex columnist for the Village Voice and the award-winning author of three books on sex: The Ultimate Guide to Anal sex for Women, Down and Dirty sex Secrets, and True Lust: Adventures in sex, Porn and Perversion. Taormino has directed, produced, and starred in two educational adult videos based on her book the Ultimate Guide to Anal sex for Women. The first volume won two Adult Video News (AVN) awards in 2000.
Adam & Eve created the adult mail order industry in 1974 as the first mail order condom distributor at a time when cheap, effective contraception was unavailable in most areas. Since then, Adam & Eve has set the standard for adult retail with a range of products including adult videos and DVDs featuring Carmen Luvana, Jenna Jameson, Chloe and more; lingerie and sex toys. In 1996 Adam & Eve led the way into the digital millennium by becoming one of the first, and certainly the largest, adult retailers on the web when it launched AdamEve.com. Now, thanks to Phil Harvey's vision and the support of more than 400 employees and millions of satisfied customers, Adam & Eve stands for sexual freedom, intimacy and safety through its products, services and health information.
