Hardware firewalls are easier to use than Zone Alarm, and provide superior incoming protection, especially at the lower levels of the protocol. They do a better job of hiding your entire internal network from the world, they support multiple computers behind the firewall, sharing a single modem, and they work well as a wireless base station, if you find that extra feature worth buying. And they work just as well for Linux and Mac users.
I'd recommend Windows users turn on their builtin firewall (in XP), run anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-trojan, and anti-spyware software, and a hardware firewall. Also keep fresh on Windows Updates, and if you have any data you don't want to lose, backups.
Unlike physicaly security, where some of you lucky folks live in rural fly over country, and barely need to lock your front door, on the web, we all live in the worst gang-infested slums on the planet.
One of many sites with additional useful information is The Home PC Firewall Guide.
In the past we've deluged Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, and this last year hit Baghdad and Balad with multiple boxes. Now especially it is a good time to remember our soldiers in Mosul.
First Box contains:

Bags candy: mixed hard candy; 2 bags Tootsie pops; 1 bag Lifesavers assorted flavors; Reese's peanut butter cups (double wrapped in Ziplocks); 12 packs Juicy Fruit gum
Drink mix: 2 cups raspberry Crystal Lite

Anyone else who can help pay for the extra movies I put in the box, please slip a few bucks or a 5 or a 10 in an envelop and send it to me. Just FReepmail me for my address.
And don't be shy about just sending a note to send along to our great soldiers. I'll be tickled to have a bunch to mail in a separate manilla envelop for our man in Mosul to pass around. It'll mean the world to them, especially now, to get something handwritten by someone besides CNN.
Cheers!
Patty
Thanks for the help, I'm gonna pick up the D-Link DI-604 today
Great pictures, especially of Laura Bush.
The 'rules' here on the Dose are not inflexible, and if one doesn't KNOW them, there's no need for chastisement. It's merely less convenient if someone posts a picture before we're done.......not a big deal.
btw, even some of us who DO know the 'rules' break them now and again......because the only REAL rule is respect for the President and First Lady, and you've got that for sure!
Welcome to this joyful, friendly thread! Don't go away!!
And Truthy, thanks for filling in for Gretchen last night.......I was running all night (and will be this morning before we actually take off), and didn't even have time to 'check in.'
GREAT pictures of Laura! She was fantastic! Thanks!
HEY...I am okay , was just a bit suprised and taken aback. I really only need to be told once. It was late, so I went to bed. I am a Republican, and huge supporter of the President. So ON TO VICTORY FOR GW BUSH in 04. Thanks for those who were concerned...about my feelings. We are all volunteers here :-)
The DOSE is a special place. rintense started it more than 3 years ago, and many of us have become good friends........some in 'real' life because of it.
Our mutual love and admiration for the President and First Lady have drawn us together and each night we spend 'quality time' here, in discussion of issues and activism, in support and prayer, in fun and sometimes just plain silliness.
It doesn't belong to any of us, and it's only real 'rule' is respect for the President (and each other).
I have had people tell me that they stay away because there are 'clicques' here...........I don't think that's true, but that's the impression some get. And others are fearful that they will offend others because they have been 'jumped on' when they posted the wrong picture, or at the wrong time, or used the wrong word to describe their feelings about the President (there have been multiple incidents where that has happened).
This concerns me greatly as we are in full reelection mode here. We need to be drawing people in, and not scaring them away. We need to support each other, but include new people who want to join us.
Those of us who are 'regulars' need to welcome others with open arms (unless, of course, they are trolling for the DU ;o).
Let's all keep the purpose of this thread in perspective. It has become greater than any one individual's tastes or sensibilities.
And NOW it is about helping this FINE, GODLY PRESIDENT get reelected!
BUSH/CHENEY 2004!!! Let's GO!!
(Just wanted to share those thoughts, and pray they are received in the loving manner in which they were intended).
Post often!
100% correct, OWF. Respect the President and each other- those are the only rules. And if you disagree with the President, say so! We all have at some point in time. Just pick the right words, ok? ;)
Welcome to the DOSE!
Hi, Rintense!
Howdy Pip!
So...........we're not allowed to call him a Marxist-Nazi-commie-pinko, RWP? ;o)
:)
Can I call W cute?
I personally think he's adorable.....
I am cut to the quick. I have never heard such language directed at me.
Come to think of it.....yes I have. Right here on FR. ;o)
Not the word I usually use to describe 58 year olds, but it certainly applies to this LADY and her husband, doesn't it??
OK.......back to packing.......leaving very shortly now.
