NEW DELHI: Turning your back on the country's top job can't be easy. But Sonia Gandhi did just that on Tuesday by turning down the prime ministerial post, holding out against intense pressure from her party and allies.
She told a gathering of stunned party MPs she was not interested in the post of PM.
Her unexpected step was countered by her party with a unanimous resolution to reconsider her decision.
The person who probably knows her the best, son Rahul, told journalists he would be "very surprised" if Sonia reconsidered her decision, while daughter Priyanka said her mother was a determined person but was fair-minded as well and would, therefore, give due thought to her partymen's appeal.
Meanwhile, the country's politics remained in the grip of uncertainty. There was growing consensus on the man who could step up if Sonia was unrelenting - Manmohan Singh.

Call came in from India and then relayed to me. Actually, folks are very happy. Very happy. Don't be tricked by the b.s. about tears and shame of Indians who feel Sonia was slighted because she is not "an Indian" (e.g. she's Italian). They don't care about that really, but it would have been strange to have a non-Indian who was not born in India running one of the up and coming super powers.
I heard this earlier today from our local friend of Rush talk show host and financial guru. I was waitin for some money for a new truck to back up to the large cap growth fund loading dock yesterday, but it hasn't arrived yet... Dang!!!
I wonder who provides IT support for them?
Same company that US corps have outsourced to? (Just kidding ... but not kidding about the hits, and the site is starting to go down) ...
Folks threatening to cut their wrists:
Naah it's all good. If the Muslims start anything, the RSS will take care of things in the West and the Sardars (not Sadars) will in Delhi and Punjab. The Muslims might as well give up right now, this isn't a battle they can win. For every penny that goes to the Muslims from the Middle East, there's a US dollar going to the RSS from temples right here in New Jersey :)
What really irritates me is a buncha fellow Christians on a thread yesterday, cheering while India's economic well-being was being flushed right down the toilet!!! For COMMUNISM!!! Would Jesus commit suicide over some Commie sympathiser not taking office? I wonder!!! He said "Render unto Ceasar," but Ceasar wasn't exactly a Commie!!!
Some Christians, I heard, "cheered" that the (pro-Hindu) BJP lost power. They are making a mistake. Christians need to fear the leftists much more than the BJP, who actually did so much for India.
India has made a very bad mistake. They almost made even a worse one in Sonia Gandhi.
Make no mistake - I liked Rajiv Gandhi very much. He was a good leader, but he had his head blown off (via terrorism) by a Tamil Tiger woman who ignited herself and the P.M., whose head flew about a block away. The bomb on this woman, was ignited by a little bead that ran down a wire string - when she bowed before Rajiv with hands folded, as she bent over the bead ran down the wire and triggered the suicide bomb wrapped on herself.
Politics in India, well ... you know ...
Looks like a Jonestown reenactment!
You got it. Pass the kool-aid out to the Congresstless.
It looks like they put on their best Saris and makeup and then got the razors for the show in front of the cameras.
Thanks for the insights. What strange people!!!
The left did NOT win, a centrist party (the BJP) lost to a centrist party (Congress).
Why strange? Public employees who do very little work and not coindidentally support the Congress party are afraid that of a strong Thatcherite leader like Manmohan Singh is going to put an end to their sinecures. So they are desparate for her to change her mind. If Sonia Gandhi holds firm on this, she should get the Nobel Peace Prize, for reconciling Hindus and Sikhs, as well as some kind of prize from us for championing conservative economics.
Some of these people who are out there demonstrating for Sonia to be prime minister are surely public schoolteachers not in front of their classrooms. Because of India's strong teacher unions, they can take off whenever they feel like it, and because of its poverty, there are no substitutes.
Sonia knew that, having to constantly fight the opposition to her rule based on her being foreign-born, she would not be able to stand up effectively against the corruption. Squeaky clean Manmohan Singh has a better shot.
Looking back at the fate of all the other Gandhis, Sonia is making a wise choice.
Where do you see India's new government going? Will they produce a peace plan with Pakistan and stop development and research on their nuclear weapon and missile programs?
