'Trust me, let me make my own decision'

TIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES[ WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2004 12:10:02 AM ]

NEW DELHI: Turning your back on the country's top job can't be easy. But Sonia Gandhi did just that on Tuesday by turning down the prime ministerial post, holding out against intense pressure from her party and allies.

She told a gathering of stunned party MPs she was not interested in the post of PM.

Her unexpected step was countered by her party with a unanimous resolution to reconsider her decision.

The person who probably knows her the best, son Rahul, told journalists he would be "very surprised" if Sonia reconsidered her decision, while daughter Priyanka said her mother was a determined person but was fair-minded as well and would, therefore, give due thought to her partymen's appeal.

Meanwhile, the country's politics remained in the grip of uncertainty. There was growing consensus on the man who could step up if Sonia was unrelenting - Manmohan Singh.

Article: Sonia Gandhi won't become P.M.

Call came in from India and then relayed to me. Actually, folks are very happy. Very happy. Don't be tricked by the b.s. about tears and shame of Indians who feel Sonia was slighted because she is not "an Indian" (e.g. she's Italian). They don't care about that really, but it would have been strange to have a non-Indian who was not born in India running one of the up and coming super powers.

Meanwhile, it was chaos outside 10 Janpath. A lady police officer trying to snatch the razor blades from Congress activists who threatened to kill themselves if Sonia Gandhi did not accept the post of Prime Minister. (PTI Photo)

There are so many hits at the Times of India website, it's starting to crash.

I wonder who provides IT support for them?

Same company that US corps have outsourced to? (Just kidding ... but not kidding about the hits, and the site is starting to go down) ...

Folks threatening to cut their wrists:

It's getting worse - I am now hearing the Congress "activists" (socialists/communists, etc.) are going to start throwing bombs and stuff. The "Party" got a lot of money from Arab and Muslim sources - and there are also of course Muslims in India ... some of them are starting to pull out "the long cutter". Also, Manmohan Singh is a Sikh (Sadar) - a religion neither Hindu nor Muslim, but powerful in India such as in the Punjab. They have long swords, often they fight with the Muslims in reaction to Muslim threats. Some of them are "insulted" that Congress members don't think him (Singh) good enough. It's going to be a mess in India. The LEFT wing won, but India lost.

Naah it's all good. If the Muslims start anything, the RSS will take care of things in the West and the Sardars (not Sadars) will in Delhi and Punjab. The Muslims might as well give up right now, this isn't a battle they can win. For every penny that goes to the Muslims from the Middle East, there's a US dollar going to the RSS from temples right here in New Jersey :)

You know what, Brian... I may be an ugly, arrogant American, but I really don't care what these people do to themselves. What's the difference between suicide and the self-interment into a tomb of Communism/Socialism and slavery to the stupid state? Man, they must have become infected with a terminal case of the stupids!!!

What really irritates me is a buncha fellow Christians on a thread yesterday, cheering while India's economic well-being was being flushed right down the toilet!!! For COMMUNISM!!! Would Jesus commit suicide over some Commie sympathiser not taking office? I wonder!!! He said "Render unto Ceasar," but Ceasar wasn't exactly a Commie!!!

Well, the impact is that India, under the LEFT wing, will again become an ugly mouthpiece against the US ... and with the corruption of the Congress Party, the Muslim element with links to terrorism comes into play. Pakistan will use any weakness. The economy, already showing signs/insight that Congress was bad news, is going to have a hard time.

Some Christians, I heard, "cheered" that the (pro-Hindu) BJP lost power. They are making a mistake. Christians need to fear the leftists much more than the BJP, who actually did so much for India.

India has made a very bad mistake. They almost made even a worse one in Sonia Gandhi.

Make no mistake - I liked Rajiv Gandhi very much. He was a good leader, but he had his head blown off (via terrorism) by a Tamil Tiger woman who ignited herself and the P.M., whose head flew about a block away. The bomb on this woman, was ignited by a little bead that ran down a wire string - when she bowed before Rajiv with hands folded, as she bent over the bead ran down the wire and triggered the suicide bomb wrapped on herself.

Politics in India, well ... you know ...

The left did NOT win, a centrist party (the BJP) lost to a centrist party (Congress).

well, the party elected to power DID start the reforms. The party thrown out of power DID have a branch dedicated to isolationism and throwing out Multi national corps (the Swadeshi manch). Communist sympathisers the Congress are not. They could be called ex-socialists, just like the BJP. The BJP, on the other hand did encourage persecution of Christians. How can you argue with the fact that more attacks happened on Christians in the 5 years of BJP rule than in all of the 50 years preceeding their rule?

the BJP, who actually did so much for India

And what DID the BJP do for India?

Start REforms? No. that was started by the Congress.

Develop India's nuclear umbrella? No, that was first started by the Congress in 74.

Lose territory to Pakistan (and then lose hundreds of soldiers trying to win it back)? Yes, the BJP did.

Sanction near genocide in Gujarat? Yes, the BJP did

Sanction the murder of Graham Staines and his two young sons (burnt alive)? Yes

Outlaw proselytism? Yes

Thanks for the insights. What strange people!!!

Why strange? Public employees who do very little work and not coindidentally support the Congress party are afraid that of a strong Thatcherite leader like Manmohan Singh is going to put an end to their sinecures. So they are desparate for her to change her mind. If Sonia Gandhi holds firm on this, she should get the Nobel Peace Prize, for reconciling Hindus and Sikhs, as well as some kind of prize from us for championing conservative economics.

Some of these people who are out there demonstrating for Sonia to be prime minister are surely public schoolteachers not in front of their classrooms. Because of India's strong teacher unions, they can take off whenever they feel like it, and because of its poverty, there are no substitutes.

Sonia knew that, having to constantly fight the opposition to her rule based on her being foreign-born, she would not be able to stand up effectively against the corruption. Squeaky clean Manmohan Singh has a better shot.

Looking back at the fate of all the other Gandhis, Sonia is making a wise choice.

Where do you see India's new government going? Will they produce a peace plan with Pakistan and stop development and research on their nuclear weapon and missile programs?
