When I hear teens use the word "hater" in a negative way, I tell them that anyone who doesn't hate is not very wise. I hate those who want to destroy my country and kill my children and grand children. I use the simplistic example of Hitler because they can all agree on that one; but I try to let them know that hatred is a pretty necessary emotion. It's self-preserving.
