Immigrant Voters Could Change Election Landscapes
Fox News ^ | May 17, 2004 | Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

WASHINGTON — A scattered movement growing across the country would buck decades of conventional wisdom and allow non-citizens the right to vote in local elections, a move that proponents say would give immigrants the ability to directly impact government in their communities.

"We’re a stronger society as a whole if we have a good quality of life and everyone participates," said Ron Hayduk, political science professor at the City College of New York and a supporter of the movement.

"There is a greater likelihood that our representatives will be responsible to everybody," Hayduk told Foxnews.com. "This is a mechanism to make sure they are held accountable."

Critics say the right to vote is a sacred privilege and responsibility of the American citizen. Giving voting rights to non-Americans "just fundamentally cheapens citizenship," said Steven Camerota.

Tom Tancredo summed it up: . “La Raza is pushing in every way, shape and form. Driver’s license bills, higher-education tuition breaks…they want to eliminate the entire concept of citizenship. That’s the goal. It is to make this place just a place of residents, not citizens. No other attachments and no idea of a nation state.” He reads from a letter: “There are 150,000 people in my district. Only about 50,000 of them are eligible to vote.” says Kendall Stewart of Brooklyn, NY. “These people pay taxes and invest in the well being of New York City yet have no say in government.” (Tom makes a “Well, duh” expression) There are cities all over the country that now allow people to vote even if they are not here legally. All they have to do is show a utility bill or some proof of residence. That’s what they’re doing.

If you provide a driver’s license you provide the tools, you provide the services, you allow people to vote. Then what is difference between someone who is here legally, who has done all the right things, and someone who has not? That’s why they’re pushing this as hard as they can."

They're moving to erase the distinction between citizens and non-citizens.

If the bastards were shot attempting to cross the border ILLEGALLY to begin with, this wouldn't be an issue!

But hey maybe one out of 10 will vote for Dubya so lets ignore the law and pander to them! Party Before Principle!

Under the UN Charter citizenship will not matter one iota.

There's no need to get upset over such things as national sovereignty, border security or citizenship anymore.

Put your BIG blinders on and look forward to the new socialist programs that will be coming.

The same as same sex "marriage" cheapens a holy sacrament, I'd say.

American citizens who help illegals, illegally vote, or champion for that cause are TRAITORS. America is for AMERICANS.

I'm getting really, really, really, REALLY tired of this illegals kay-r-a-p. When are the citizens going to stand up and shout CEASE AND DESISTS? WHEN will our "government" address this danger?

Soon, I hope. "In our own hands" is a drastic measure that we should not be forced to take.

I'm holding off on pessimism until 2005. If W doesn't get with the sovereignty program by then we will know where his priorities lie without a reelection to worry about.

Really, enough is enough. Even illegals are crying about newer illegals putting them out of work.

Perhaps the only good thing coming out of the foolishness in Massachusetts is the Democrats crossing the line of most Hispanic's tolerance. Perhaps the time of retribution is at hand for the Party that excels at taking minorities for granted.

I really dont think minorities know they are being taken advantage of, especially the less educated ones from Mexico. All they know is how to work the system and that the system of handing money to illegals and other no-goods is propped up by socialist democrats.

Immigrants, illegal and otherwise, IMO have NO CLUE.

Prayer is all that is left for this country.

The Hispanics are extremely politically aware. Near the bottom of the article one man shows how they can not be all stereotypically lumped together:

Robert de Posada, spokesman for the Washington, D.C-based Latino Coalition said immigrants understand the tiered system of living in the United States, and that voting is a privilege one earns as a citizen.

"There have to be special rights that citizens have that other immigrants who haven’t yet decided to become citizens shouldn’t have."

Good man.

I'm sorry NewRomeTacitus, but this sentance does not sound stupid to you? "other immigrants (ie ILLEGAL) who have not "decided" to become citizens. . "

Give me a break! This "Good Man" has NO clue!

It wouldn't be quite as bad if everyone were held to the same standard. I'd still fight it hammer & tong, but I'd appreciate the sincerity of one world proponents.

But no one is asking China, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, or even Mexico, to give up THEIR soveriegnty.

Its a one way deal, apparently.

If they allow this, just tell me what benefit I have being an American citizen? None whatsoever. In fact, I'd likely be better off NOT being an American citizen, since I'd get free medical care, free tuition, bargain basement rates if I want to buy a house, free food, etc. Our politicians are stumbling all over themselves surrendering our country away to any and all politically-correct group that comes along.

And good will win over evil every time. We'll take care of it when necessary, may take "critical mass" but thats where apologists are taking it.

And We the People have the RIGHT to tell the government, at ANY level, to CEASE AND DESISTS. We need to start exercising our rights folks.

Did y'all see on FNC just now Rev Robin Hoover of Humane Borders? Good grief, America is being sued because some illegals died because Arizona didn't provide them with enough water stations. Humane Borders is demanding taxpayers not only foot the bill for these illegals once they get here but provide them with nice cool water on their trip through the desert. Give them the right to vote and we might as well put up a sign, "Welcome to New Mexico" and really mean it.

This is what the UN's new world order is all about. When there is a mean line through out one continent, then they will move to the next. There's only seven continents and they have almost completed their task in North America, the world most powerful continent. The other six will be a cake walk.

His English is indeed mangled and my spell checker balked, but I took his meaning as "Citizens, especially those who were immigrants, must retain the rights (and privileges) of citizenship and not grant them to illegals who don't bother with pursuing proper citizenship at all."

As I can't perceive any other way to read that I agree with the spirit of his statement. I also believe he needs to get rid of his satellite dish and start absorbing English (by their gray dishes ye may know them).
