BERLIN (Reuters) - Players from a visiting soccer team were forced to seek refuge in the changing rooms after home supporters brandishing guns attacked them in a dispute over a refereeing decision, Bremen police said on Monday.

At least 30 angry home fans stormed onto the pitch to attack the visiting players and a 21-year-old man had to be taken to hospital after he was beaten around the head with a corner flag, police in the northern German port city said.

Two of the attackers threatened the players with firearms, they added.

The assailants face charges of harassment, assault and violations of gun law.

That's nothing...NO big deal..Back in the old days, when the NYC PSAL basketball championships were held in the old Madison Square Garden, if you were, for example, a DeWitt Clinton student who mistakenly walked into a Boys HS bathroom for that day, you came out via the sewage pipe into Hudson River. And that doesn't include the occasion poor sould who "flew" out of the balcony...and it's ALL true, not ONE urban legend..

And folks think the Boston/NY rivalry is too serious.

Sam, after a couple of beers - I might even consider shaking your hand.

Since they're actually going to be charged, we can safely assume they do not practice the Religion of Peace.

Did you snicker at those of us who got paid to sit courtside at NBA and NCAA basketball games?

Would you have snickered at me the time I got to spend a hot summer day covering a charity swim event - which meant getting paid to sit under some trees, read a book and drink iced capuccino outside the World Financial Center, while waiting for the swimmers to make it to the end of the route? :)

That's nothing. Socer has literally led to WAR between two countries.

A Tragic Soccer Match

The immediate cause for the beginning of hostilities, was the violence that developed in both countries, during the qualifying round for the 1970 World Soccer Cup. The first game, which matched the national teams of El Salvador and Honduras, took place in the Honduran Capital of Tegucigalpa, and won by Honduras. When the game ended, Salvadoran fans, which had traveled to support their team, complained of mistreatment in the hands of Honduran nationals. At the same time, the anti-Salvadoran propaganda increased its tempo in local radio stations. The next game took place on 15 June in San Salvador, and this time, the Salvadoran team being the winner. It was the Hondurans turn to be the target of attacks and insults from the Salvadoran population. At the same time this was happening, Honduran radio stations broadcasts exacerbated the anti-Salvadoran climate, and this caused an eruption of violence against Salvadorans residing in Honduras, producing looting, arson and persecution against the Salvadorans there. Many Salvadorans residing in Honduras had to flee towards the border and seek refuge in their country of origin.

The sport is aching slow and dull, their fans need some thrills and excitement. So they riot. There was a war called the "Soccer War" between two dirt poor Central American countries. It started over a disputed soccer game.
