No, it's expected.
We really give the French a hard time. When you get away from places like Paris and Cannes, they aren't so bad and aren't America hating vipers like they are in San Francisco.
Once when the USS JFK pulled into Cannes, a couple of sailor buddies of mine and I wandered waaaaayyyy back up into the residental district to a small neighborhood bar and were treated quite well. We spoke no French and they spoke no English but they bought us more drinks than we could handle and had to literally lead us back to the ship. We would have had a hard time finding the way back sober in the daytime, much less drunk as a skunk at night. (Ahhh, the good times!)
