Just under four months from today, Americans will be able to walk out of a gun store with an AK-47 rifle, an Uzi or other weapon of mass murder under their arm.
Unless Congress acts and Republican leaders show no inclination to do so the 10-year-old federal assault gun ban will expire Sept. 13. A word from President Bush would get a renewal before lawmakers, a majority of whom would probably approve it. But the president is silent.
Most people, including most gun owners, are properly alarmed. A survey released last month by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center found that 71% of those surveyed and 64% of gun owners wanted Congress to extend the ban.
But congressional leaders, too accustomed to taking marching orders from the National Rifle Assn., have stymied the reauthorization bill that Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), John W. Warner (R-Va.) and Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced last year.

Yo LAT, 36%er here, it's time to roll back the "infringments" or suffer the unintended consequences.

If that % is true (and that's a big IF), it's only because those same gun owners have absolutely no idea what the AWB actually entails.
lol....well, how can anyone not be convinced by this reasoned, adult, responsible argument?!
"Just under four months from today, Americans will be able to walk out of a gun store with an AK-47 rifle, an Uzi or other weapon of mass murder under their arm."
I have two AR-15s - I suppose those are "other?" What a jerk. What an ignorant bigot. Talk about biased reporting - this was on the opinion page, right? And the LA hypocrites on the left mock Fox.
Most people now own a weapon of mass murder.
P.S. Andy Rooney was on just now make a$$ out of
himself again.
LOL, I can do that today if I want to, saw one in a pawn shop last weekend.
That's what I'm saying. I bought mine last year, but have to preface any conversation about it with 'It's perfectly legal, but I bought an AK-47 last year'. People look at me like I'm nuts, but it's just a semi-automatic rifle, just like the Mini-14 or AR-15 or any other common piece.
No bias here /sarcasm
Not quite. It prohibited further registration of "transferable" MGs, that is, those that can be possessed by non-licensees. MGs registered as transferable prior to 86 can still transferred.
While I also have a hard time believing those numbers, there are also those gun-owners that bought pre-ban weapons at black market prices (thanks to the ban in the first place) and don't want to lose their investment when the prices on these weapons fall to a more realistic level.
Personally, I was determined to fight for the end of the ban and then convert my post-ban weapons to pre-ban configurations legally.
Bullshit. Pure unadulterated Bullshit. Full auto has been banned if built after 1986, and it requires a Class III to get one. They have nothing to do with the so called assault weapons ban.

I just got one last week. An a thousand rounds of ammunition to boot.
Almost, the masthead editorial are the official daily talking points of the paper on their editorial page. Typically, there are two to four of them, and the exact author or authors remain a mystery. That's about the only differnce as opposed to OpEd columnists usually on the opposing page, unless your a conservative like Bill Safire working for the NY Times or George Will for the Washington Post.
Thanks for the ping sultan.
Oh, you gotta write a short story about your MG shoots with the ATF coming to play! Sounds like a very interesting time!
you can see the future, swami!
If it gets the Times' collective panties in a bunch, it must be a good thing.
When I get bored, I can do stupid things. This is the first time I ever went straight to their homepage. I spied the title at the bottom. Once I saw that they were gainsaying the evil NRA and those wicked assault weapons, I couldn't resist.
many gun owners will not identify themselves, they would hang up so they only get the gun owners who are likely to want some gun control
