Palestinian officials said Sunday that they are ready for a cease-fire with Israel as a first step toward reviving the stalled road map peace plan. Militant groups Islamic Jihad and Hamas told Egyptian mediators they are ready to commit to a cease-fire, Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Sha'ath said.
Sha'ath said he made the cease-fire proposal during a meeting Saturday in Jordan with United States Secretary of State Colin Powell.
"We told Powell that ... we are ready for such a cease-fire if the United States is able to bring an Israeli commitment to such an agreement," he said.
Sha'ath said Powell did not respond to the offer. Powell was traveling Sunday and not immediately available to comment.
Earlier Sunday, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that Palestinians must refrain from reacting to Israeli raids so as not to give Israel an excuse for attacks, Israel Radio reported.
Qureia, who met with Mubarak in Cairo, also called for a cease-fire, saying it could lead to a renewal of peace talks, the radio said.
In addition, Qureia said the Palestinians would fulfill all their commitments if Israel were to completely withdraw from the Gaza Strip, according to the report. However, he reiterated the Palestinians' call for withdrawal from the West Bank as well.
Meanwhile, Palestinian officials said the cease-fire proposal would be raised in talks Monday with U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in Berlin.
The proposal followed a bloody week of fighting in the Gaza Strip in which 13 Israeli soldiers were killed in three separate attacks.
Israeli officials brushed off the Palestinian proposal. "We have to see actions, not declarations," said a senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisting that Israel was only defending itself against Palestinian terror attacks.
Ping.
As a bonus, they'll return a couple of body parts at the cease fire meeting.
It was a few months last time.
It all depends upon how much time they need to rest, regroup, and form a new and better plan of attack on Israel.
Me thinks the Israelis are finally on to their antics.
Sounds like the Palestinians need time to reload.
OH GOD they want meet Condi Rice meet with Arafat
That is gross Gross Yonif
I don't need that Desert Rat meet sister like Condri
It is bad enough Ariel Sharon has crush on her
Funny that they should say "cease fire talks" to the western media at the exact same time that they are calling for renewed attacks against Israel and America from the Mosques, by order of Arafat. Why one would think we were dealing with the scum of the earth, men without honor, baby killers and all that...
Stop all American tax dollars from going to any Islamic country that yells Jehad NOW, or pay in blood later, killed by weapons that we paid for today.
"The ask for a ceasefire every time they start getting their ass really kicked."
Yep, this should be a sure sign for Israel to re-double their efforts against them.

"Their lines have broken. Now we charge."
That's pretty much it. They're like kids who, when losing a game, start shouting "Kings X"
Excuse my ignorance... but how is it that the US, according to all the libs, is supposed to go to the UN for permission to hiccup, but the Middle East Peace is dependent on the mediation and intervention of no more than the US???? I'm sorry... but I can't be the only person that knows the world depends on us, not us on the UN... when are they going to figure that out and stop with the United Nations mantra.
Now, now, now.... lets not get over zealous... Nuking anyone isn't going to gain peace. For every evil man you kill, ten more will pop up.. They are like warts, or mushrooms.
