Army intelligence officers suspected that a Syrian and admitted Jihadist who was detained at Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad knew about the illegal flow of money, arms and foreign fighters into Iraq. But he was smug, the officers said, and refused to talk. So last November, they devised a special plan for his interrogation, going beyond what Army rules normally allowed.
An Army colonel in charge of intelligence-gathering at the prison, spelling out the plan in a classified cable to the top U.S. military officer in Iraq, said interrogators would use a method known as "fear up harsh," which military documents said meant "significantly increasing the fear level in a security detainee." Their aim was to make the 31-year-old Syrian think his only hope in life was to talk, undermining his confidence in what they termed "the Allah factor."
According to the plan, interrogators needed the assistance of military police supervising his detention at the prison, who ordinarily play no role in interrogations under Army regulations. First, the interrogators were to throw chairs and tables in the man's presence at the prison and "invade his personal space."

Until just recently Rush has been periodically ragging on bush for selling out conserv ative principles.
A couple of years ago during a radio sweeps ratings period Rush went on a bitter two-week anti-Bush rant.
That is why there are a fair nuimber of people here on FR that no longer hold Rush in such high esteem
Here's the "torture" they requested permission to apply: "First, the interrogators were to throw chairs and tables in the man's presence at the prison...then the police were to put a hood on his head and take him to an isolated cell through a gantlet of barking guard dogs; there, the police were to strip-search him and interrupt his sleep for three days with interrogation, barking and loud music, according to Army documents."

I thought the same thing in 2000, but after Labor day 2000, it was a topsy turvy ride up to election day.
But no one said it is against the law to act like Chicken Little.
I will be happy to reasses my position if and when Bush gives me some reason to hope.
But as of now he absorbing blows like a punch-drunk fighter and is giving me nothing to hang my hat on.
I'm not going to invest a lot of emotion in a guy who has decided that maybe he doesn't really want a second term all that much.
I went through that in 1988 and I'm not going through it again.
That was primarily over CFR and the EPA global warming report.
He has been rock solid in his support for Bush and Rumsfeld in the WOT. This where the Left is directing their attack. Rush, unlike some people, is not buffaloed.

JMO, but Bush is fighting a two front war, one against the terrorists and the second against the media and it seems that you take the medias side.
If you don't want to "go through it again like you did in 88", why put us through your negative posts ? This isn't all about you.
We were never "ahead" by any margin that was meaningful in light of expected voter fraud.
You sound like you voted for Bush reluctantly back then and thus cannot be expected to have faith in his ability, or those he consults with.

I went to the mat with the PTB here on FR defending Bush, and I left for a while as the result of the Great Schism.
So my bonafides as a Bush supporter are sound.
But, dammit, if Bush isn't going to defend himself then there's nothing we can do to help him.
I have to see some sign that he really wants to be reelected and isn't just foing through the motions like his father did.
Untoil the people in the national GOP get the idea that all isn't sweetness and light here in fly-over country then there will be no fix possible.

The Dems are desperate for power. They all live on government sinecures and handouts. They believe any tactic or lie is good if it gets them back in power.
Thus it is going to be a bare knuckles fight to the death. However, Bush is a great poker player, and has a great sense of politics and the American people.
And many of us pray for him.
Finally, quidnunc may be down on Bush, but never underestimate the power of a boring egoist like Kerry to cut his own throat.
So give us your omnipotent wisdom of what Bush should do. Sheesh, Rumsfeld ain't going anywhere. He gave him a big endorsement.

Take a break away from liberal papers and other media sources for awhile, they are getting to you, IMO.
So what should Bush do to stop the feeding frenzy? Is there anything he can do besides ride it out?
I believe Gore won Illinois by almost 11 points in 2000...You are not in the typical Bush supporting state. What you hear around you isn't what I hear in Texas...unless you count the typical liberal rags.
The court martials are coming up soon. They'll take up a lot of air time, but what the American people will see is that justice is done, and then the story will fizzle.
The June 30th handover of sovereignty to the Iraqis is a biggy, and we'll be fighting the Battle of the Bulge there until then.
After that, it's anybody's guess about what is next, as we've never really done this before.
