SAN ANTONIO (AP) - SBC Communications Inc. president William Daley has resigned and the company named Forrest Miller, currently corporate planning group president, to replace him.

The telecommunications company offered no explanation for the abrupt personnel changes in its brief statement.

Miller's title will be Group President-External Affairs and Planning and he will report to SBC chairman and chief executive Edward Whitacre Jr. The group will combine the company's public affairs and planning units

``We appreciate Bill's efforts on behalf of SBC and wish him well,'' Whitacre said.

SBC, the nation's No. 2 local-phone company, has been struggling in the face of vigorous competition from smaller telecom providers.

Daley, a former official in the Clinton Administration, is the brother of Richard Daley, the longtime mayor of Chicago, a position his father also held.

X42i had told his cabinet that Lewinsky rumors were lies. He assured them he didn't do it. They subsequently went in front of TV cameras and repeated the lies.

Rumor had it that Bill Daley had his bags packed and was going to resign as Commerce Sec. after x42i admitted he was doin Lewinsky.

Richie talked him out of it.

I thought when he went on board it was very odd; I mean a top govt official (demoncrat no less) going to the head of a major corporation? even if he was a secretary maybe let him go to the board room but the head of a communications company in the process of major expansion? too weird

Indeed, and my guess is that it's because he was diametrically at odds with his Board over the looming CWA strike. Given Daley's politics, I'm further guessing that he wanted to cave to the union goons' demands and that the Board adamantly refused.

... I guess being a Clinton shill only takes you so far... SBC is having big labor troubles; I'm going with the, "He wanted to give away the store to the union, so the board dumped him..." at this point...
