Cold Turkey
In These Times ^ | May 10, 2004 | Kurt Vonnegut

Posted on 05/13/2004 9:23:01 PM PDT by Rennes Templar

Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of. We dreamed of such an America during the Great Depression, when there were no jobs. And then we fought and often died for that dream during the Second World War, when there was no peace.

But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas.

Good Lord, to think I read and enjoyed his novels when I was in college. The guys 81 now, and probably a card or two short of a full deck.

I'd say a card or two is all he's got left.

Et in arcadia ego.

Remember, many virtues and talents are mutually exclusive. A good writer might also be a political and moral idiot; doesn't detract from the value of his output, though.

By the way, I think we might have a mutual friend. do you know a Mister J, by any chance?

I guess he's still emotionally scarred from having had Geraldo Rivera as a son-in-law.

"...Just another wacko!..."

Naw, just a formerly good writer whose brain is goin' South on him.

It's unfortunate, but it happens. Been through it with a few relatives..

Of course, I'm still OK, but those alien-anal-probes are starting to piss-me-off................FRegards

Yeah, I have read much of his stuff.

I think writers of sci-fi and some other topics always seem to be dreamers.

Their dreams are threatened by war and it really forces them to reality, where things are not so pleasant as a dream.
