Pretty good speculation, I'd say. Wonder if the truth will ever come out?
To: TomGuy
I have not seen or been able to find a photo of Berg's body after it was dumped or hung or whatever.

There was a post on FR quoting others staying at the same hotel in Baghdad. It seems he didn't so much design towers etc as climb them and service antennas etc on the top. One guy said Berg would walk around with a safety belt on. After the war there would probably be a need for some climbers. Still, he was at best very naive and certainly didn't deserve such an awful fate.

Exactly. His bio and profile and travels do NOT match up in a plausible way.

How about a tall tower near a prison?

I've had visions all my life, no kidding. It really gets in the way of a normal life. Too bad it doesn't work at the race track or stock market.

Nobody is going to leave a communications tower in the hands of a freelance 26 year old with questionable credentials and no Engineering license. Not even in Iraq Why not???? At least 45% of the people (that are allowed to vote) in this country are going to vote for Flipflop Kerry. Anything is possible.

Well, we are digging for the truth now. The real question is whether it will be widely disseminated through the media cartel (ABCNBCCBSCNNMSNBC).

I suspect the same thing. He was in on it and either thought that the propaganda video would end differently or (and this is a pretty out there) he knew what would happen and was planning on "martyring himself" for the cause.
To: isthisnickcool
I think that he beieved that he had won their trust, at least partially. He had no way to know that all along they were playing him for the fool he was, stringing him along. What a betrayal, to suddenly jump him with a knife. A lot of his screaming at first was from shock and surprise. (Pure speculation of course.)

Berg speaks or reads Farsi? A book shows connection to an Iranian? A top Al Qaeda nutcase does the killing himself? What was Berg?
One of his friends has been quoted as saying that the Iraqi police thought Berg was an Israeli spy. To add insult to injury, Berg was also carrying some literature written in Farsi including a book about Iran.

I love the classical allusions like "Prometheus." I sprinkled some through my novel, such as Orion and Diane. (Anyone know what Diane did to Orion?)

His uncle is an Iraqi, but is he a Muslim? If so, it's another oddity because you just don't hear of that combo too often...a Muslim married to a Jew.

Indeed. This is what drew me to this site in 2000. I was finishing my MA and was working on campus. One evening at work, a couple of fellow conservatives wanted a place to discuss the shenanigans of the 2000 election. I heard about FR on the radio and entered the URL. I am glad that I did so. I am often pleased by the insight and passion of the folks here.

That may be plausible, but there is no shortage of work in the US for people stupid enough or brave enough to climb 1000 foot towers and change lightbulbs. Those guys make at least $100 per hour. What kind of money could he make in Iraq? Unless he had a military contract he probably couldn't make more than $5 per hour. The people who changed lightbulbs on towers for Saddam weren't all killed in the war. And they would be the first in line to try to get the business after the war and they speak the local language.
Just too weird.
