"I think Spunky got the quote wrong---"he was their best friend" not "friend of al qaeda." If I got the quote wrong it was only in the word, "He was a friend of the Al Quada". It might have been, "He was a friend to the Al Quada.
Both my husband and I heard him say Al Quada, and if he didn't say it there would have been no need for the anchor to have said he meant to say "Friend to the Iraqi's."

The quote from the Reuters story says:
"I am sure that he only saw the good in his captors until the last second of his life," Berg said. "They did not know what they were doing. They killed their best friend."
