So what's the excuse for all the other Popes in history that did seriously bad things?
To put a man on a pedistal where he can do "no wrong" in the field of religion is contrary to anything I know of in the Bible. Man is born in sin. Having other men choose a man for Pope doesn't wash that away.
This is one of the root issues as to why I'm not Catholic.

This is one of the root issues as to why I'm not Catholic. Another might be that you have a profound misunderstanding about "infallibility".
Only when he is addressing matters of faith and morals specifically and officially as the head of the church, he is no more infallible than you or me.
Political commentary is not covered, and is always counterproductive.

(I don't do diplomacy either.)

Catholics believe that the Pope cannot teach error concerning a restricted set of matters--faith and morals--in a restricted set of circumstances.
There is ample foundation in Scripture for this belief: The promise made by Jesus that his Church would last until the end of time, and that he would remain with it and guide it.
Popes can sin, and have done so. Popes can be dead wrong about a lot of subjects.
