May 13, 2004 -- JUST 10 weeks ago, when John Kerry came out of nowhere to vault ahead of the Democratic presidential field and leave his rivals choking in his dust, conventional wisdom had it that President Bush was certainly a goner and that Kerry should start writing his inaugural address. Now, with Bush showing surprising resiliency in the face of probably the most politically damaging months of his presidency, some Democrats are starting to push the panic button.

Where was that the conventional wisdom? I don't remember hearing that anywhere. I certainly don't remember anyone here saying "Uh-oh, they chose Kerry. Bush is doomed."

You can paint a zebra into a white horse, but eventually, people will notice the stripes once the paint starts cracking.

All the favorable media cover up of Kerry's stripes might not be sufficient to bamboozle the swing voters. My wife is the ultimate swing voter, she voted for Clinton twice and for Bush in 2000. She's still undecided, but she can't find anything exciting in Kerry.

But resumes, even ones filled with battlefield heroism, don't elect a president. (Just ask Bob Dole.)

Kerry seems to be making the same critical mistake Dole did - he is running AGAINST someone rather than FOR something. Dole's main theme was "I am not Bill Clinton." Kerry's is "I am not George Bush." That strategy may energize the base, but offers nothing to anyone else.

Stick to your guns, Johnny! Keep running as the "anti-Bush."
