No, it is NOT their job and they need to be reminded of thaton a regular basis.
As a former member of the news media I am disgusted by much of what I see and read and am continually on them trying to remind them of the fact their job is to REPORT the news, not create it.
I guess it is time for me to go back into the field.

Thank you!...There's only one thing that will stop the media 24/7 prison story blitz,...ratings ...The story in Sudan is tragic. Slavery of Christians is also common.
Bush's ratings are up. The media weeps and wonders why..

I spent a number of years in the newsroom of a major daily newspaper. It's truly amazing how the staff is split between liberals and conservatives. Almost all of the writers are liberal, the majority of page design and layout people are conservative. It makes for some interesting arguments as they begin the layout every evening! I was there representing the news photo department so I frequently got involved in the arguments as they tried to decide which photo(s) to run with an article. I've seen the participants almost come to blows over the choices. In the end it's the editor who makes the call, but the hard feelings can go on for several days. The thing I was truly amazed at however was the care EVERYONE takes to select photos that would not be offensive. Contrary to what I had heard over the years photos were not selected for shock value, at least not at this morning paper.

Partial birth abortion isn't too horrific for our media --- but panties on Iraqi men's heads for some reason is.
