May 10 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. military in Iraq destroyed the headquarters of anti-U.S. Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's militia in a Baghdad slum and killed 35 of his supporters, U.S. Army Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt said.

The building -- which about 50 insurgents tried to retake two nights ago -- was destroyed by fire from tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and helicopters, Kimmitt said during a briefing televised from Baghdad. Sadr militia tried to use civilians as human shields and fired indiscriminately as U.S. soldiers raided the area, Kimmitt said.

Well let's look at the bright side, at least those 35 weren't made to wear women's stockings or anything like that.

Strikes me that under cover of the prison abuse story our military is steadily killing these guys. I also agree at this point Sadr himself should be targeted.

He'll be a bit tougher to get, since he seems to be the typical "mighty Muslim warrior" - full of big talk when he has plenty of illiterate saps to goad into charging our Bradleys and plenty of women and kids to hide behind, but a blubbering p*ssy when he's facing our guns.

Maybe.... He's being a pretty good useful idiot, though -- his activities are strengthening and coalescing the "moderate" clerics (a must-have for us to leave Iraq); spurring the growth of anti-Sadr militias (ditto), discrediting the salamikaze movement; and, of course, daily delivering dozens of his fanatics to their white-raisin reqward.

Which is to say: I still think he's more useful to us alive or dead.

We need some IDF help on this. THEY are the experts at finding the king rat in a sea of rats -- and taking him out.

Sdar has to move around, he has to communicate. He should even be a softer target because he doesn't have the Pallie's years of experience hiding from the IDF.

Times-a-wasting. The longer it takes to get this faker off the street and behind bars, the harder it will get. Saddam's name is not being mentioned in any of the news, the same will happen to al-Sadr.

We undoubtedly know where he is, all or most of the time.

Question is -- given that his activities have got (among other things) the other clerics actively cooperating with us; and given also that he's discrediting the whole salamikaze movement by his obvious personal cowardice -- not to mention that we kill dozens of his guys every day.... Is he more use to us alive?

Sounds to me like he is.

I think they're trying to have the Iraqis handle this more. Our strategy is working. We're decreasing their numbers and the Iraqi's are getting closer to wanting him lynched themselves. That's good.

Didn't Sadr only start with about 2,000? How many does he have left?
