Mi-26 Helicopter - A Gem Of Berlin Aerospace Show
Posted on 05/10/2004 1:00:25 PM PDT by knighthawk
MOSCOW, May 10 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Mi-26 helicopter, the heaviest one in the world, will be a hit at the ILA-2004 International Aerospace Show, which opened at Schoenfeld Airport near Berlin.
"The Mi-26 military transport helicopter, designed for airlifting of troops with arms and military hardware and carrying of up to 20 tons of cargo will doubtlessly evoke interest among experts at the air show. In an airborne version the helicopter is capable of carrying up to 82 members of a landing party," said a spokesman for Rosoboronexport, a state intermediary company promoting Russian arms and military equipment abroad.
According to him, Mi-26 helicopters already have a long record of service in many countries, including Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Peru and Somalia.
"At the aerospace show experts will also be able to get detailed information about the Mi-171-Sh military transport helicopter manufactured at an aircraft-building works in the city of Ulan Ude," he said. It is a modernized version of the Mi-171 cargo and passenger helicopter and is being effectively promoted by Rosoboronexport in various regions of the world," the spokesman told RIA Novosti.
He pointed out in this connection that "helicopter manufacturers in the West show interest in cooperating with their Russian colleagues in what regards heavy helicopters."
The Rosoboronexport spokesman explains this interest by the leading positions occupied by Russian designers and manufacturers in this sphere. "It is for this reason that, in response to the requests of France and Germany, the Russian side plans also performing demonstration flights of Mi-26 in these countries, and a joint meeting of Russian and NATO experts, at which the Russian experience in manufacturing heavy helicopters will be studied, is slated for September this year," the spokesman said.

It doesn't seem to so much fly as it seems to hover about like a bumblebee.
Both fly despite physics.
*chuckle*
but it is a neat helo.

Serious question...given the fact that combat in Iraq has exposed the increased vulnerability of choppers on the modern battlefield, even the mobile attack helicopters...what's the rational for having what is essetially a "much bigger target?"..To be blunt, rememebr the terrible news reports when a Blackhawk ferryign troops back was hit, killing 10 0or 12. Awful story..Now imaging one of these going down, with 50 or more troops on it..

IIRC, there were pictures of Mi-26s hauling dump bucket after dump bucket of wet concrete to bury the No. 4 reactor at Chernobyl when it melted down in the 1980's.

Probably a commercial passenger version, if built for that purpose.

Reminds me of the Huey we had at aircraft mechanics school. It was donated by the Army and listed as inoperable. Unfortunately for the instructors most of us were former military mechanics getting our civilian certification. One of the guys that I worked with at the airport just happened to be a Marine Reserve Cobra pilot. Bad combination. Talk about parts falling off! It's a wonder we are still alive.

That happened in Chechenya. MANPAD bagged a full Mi-26 doing a troop rotation; 100+ body count, IIRC.

I would love to see a side-by-side comparrison of thie monster vs a Super Super SeaKnight(?), or whatever those huge Sykorsky's were called used for aircrew extractions and other duty in Vietnam. That would be a sight to behold.

People say about the H-53 (a US helo) that if the hydraulic fluid stops leaking out LAND because you are out of hydraulic fluid.
