JEDDAH, 10 May 2004 The Saudi Binladin Group has been short-listed to build the worlds tallest building. It is the only Arab company on the short-list for the construction of the 705-meter Burj Dubai in the emirate, scheduled for completion in 2008.
The skyscraper will outstrip by more than 250 meters the current contender, Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, and will house a hotel wing, apartments, offices, entertainment centers and restaurants.
A spokesman for UAE developer Emaar Properties earlier told the Gulf News daily the projects also included one of the worlds largest malls the Dubai Mall with over two million square feet of retail space and a mock old town, making it a city within a city.
Record-obsessed Dubai is already home to the worlds largest man-made island, the Palm Jumeirah, and the worlds first seven-star hotel, the Burj Al-Arab.
Fittingly, the Binladin group is Saudi Arabias biggest construction company and has carried out projects including the expansion of the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah.
Construction of the Burj Dubai project has already started, with excavation of the site completed recently.
Sales of residential units in the tower will start soon, said an official with Emaar Properties. This follows the bullish response to the apartment sales on the six high-rises branded The Residences, and part of the wider Burj Dubai project.

The Saudi Binladin Group has been short-listed to build the worlds tallest building. This way the explosives can be pre-installed in the foundations where they belong.

Never thought about it that way. That's why they say Canada and Great Britain have yet to be attacked-yet-they serve as a haven for the architects of these horrific crimes against humanity. Why sh** in the place you sleep?

Professional speaking, I'd love to see those plans
(blueprints for you non-construction types)
The structural drawings would be interesting since the caissons1 have to go down to bedrock. I don't know how far that is IN A DESERT, but it's got to be a looooong way down.
And the HVAC2 would be something else too. Miles and miles of piping, hundreds of thousands of pounds of ductwork, hundreds of fans & air handling units.
And I'd love to see how they address the fire protection3 issue. You need fresh water for that and in a building like this, that's millions of gallons. How do you do that in a desert? And again miles and miles of pipes. Hundreds of pumps, valves.
Hey I could free up the next couple of years, maybe I'll submit a bid to do the CAD mechanical shop drawings4 (kidding)
notes:
1: Caissons are large round poured concrete columns which the vertical structural columns attach.
2: HVAC - Heating Ventilating & Air Conditioning (my specialty)
3: Fire Protection is the sprinkler system.
4: Shop drawings are the actual construction drawings used to build a building (we fix all the arch/engineers screw-ups and redesign as required).

...maybe I'll submit a bid...You should seriously consider it. These Persian Gulf emirates are in constant search of all kinds of technical expertise and they pay a glorious premium for it..

BinladinWhoa now. Let's not jump to the conclusion that 'bin Laden' is the same as 'Binladin.' Note the difference in spacing, capitalization, and spelling. Even though the names are pronounced the same and written the same in Arabic, let's not jump to conclusions. It's all a religion of peace, baby, yeah!

You see, Mr. President, this whole 9/11 thing is just a misunderstanding. My nephew Osama was just engaged in some corrupt business practices to drum up some bid'ness for the family. Your Democrat Party seems so much more understanding of this. Please accept our apologies. Allah akbar. </sarcasm>

Who is going to insure this ripe target? I dunno.. they could always build it just like the "Kingdom Center" - you know, the one in Riyadh with the hole in the upper floors that's good for training terrorist hijackers:

Yes, Osam Bin Laden is the son of Muhamnaad Bin Laden the founder of the Bin Laden group the largest Arabic consturction and engineering firm. Bin Laden is one of fifty children in the Bin Laden family. Where do you think OSama Bin Laden has got his money from to build his terrorist organization.
I was observing some of your comments in the last few days and you always come out very negative about everything and you are against President Bush. Go to Democratic Underground, you belong there.

couldn't they just go to Halon?
I mean, it isn't as if they aren't rolling in money, and it isn't as if they really care if office peons suffocate.
