Freedom of speech is not at all the same as free speech. And freedom of thought is not the same as freedom from thought. There was a possibility that Sen. Santorum may have injected a concept that was not in full conformity with the conclusions already formed, and this was a desperate attempt to avoid any further modification of those half-formed and half-baked perceptions of the world.

Apparently Santorum didn't promise them MORE and/or enough free stuff, then a dozen or so walked out. But his major mistake from what I see in the article, was him forgetting to say they were all victims of whitey's oppression.

A college degree doesn't guarantee intelligence. About 90% of the children born to black women in Philadelphia are born out of wedlock. This is a crime that the black community doesn't seem to care a whole lot about. When you have only one parent you are behind the 8 ball right from birth. Turning your back on the problem only permits its continuation.
