Rumsfeld Apology Fails to Calm Arab Anger

DUBAI (Reuters) - His apology was late and the damage done, said Arab and European commentators on Saturday, reacting to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

"While he (Rumsfeld) has been in charge, murder, torture and humiliation were heaped on Iraqi detainees almost as a matter of course," the Saudi daily Arab News commented.
"Rumsfeld's apology came too late," said Jordanian analyst Hani Hourani. "I believe Rumsfeld should resign because the torture reflected a widespread policy adopted by the U.S. army in Iraq (news - web sites) and maybe Afghanistan (news - web sites) as well."
Rumsfeld took responsibility on Friday for abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. troops and offered his "deepest apology" to victims during U.S. Senate hearings broadcast live in the Arab world as well as the United States.
But Rumsfeld said he would not resign just to satisfy his political enemies.
Many Arabs and Europeans, however, said he should quit.
Reinhard Buetikofer, chairman of Germany's Green Party, a junior partner in the government, said: "The minister who is responsible for such things must resign: Mr. Rumsfeld."

This is a hypocritical calling for apologies. We need to keep our mouths shut, do the court marshallings in private, and demand that the Arab/Muslim world start acting like they care when we are killed if they want our respect, not always demanding that we respect them while they slaughter us and parade around on our dead bodies! Well said Race!

And they loved us so much before all this came out.
Who gives a rat's a$$? We need to do what is right and ignore the naysayers and the dark forces.

So! The apoligies issued by President Bush and Secretary of defence, is too little-too late to pacify you Arab Muslim terrorist sonovabitches, is it! Well both guys work for me, and embarrassed the hell out of me by offering an apology to you scum sucking hoodlums who owe more apologies to more people than anyone ever owed in the history of the world.
You sonovabitches invented atrosities. It's no wonder you invented Allah, for no real God would ever admit to being your creator. If Muslims and Arabs are not possed by the devil, the devil could take lessions in evil, from whatever does possess you hateful bastards.
If the apologies you were given in my name by my hired hands without my permission, doesn't satisfy you-you can kiss Arafat's pie hole!

And I dont hear the Arab or Muslim world apologizing to us for these acts, either, I hear them rejoicing over it! So they are heathens. So they don't comprehend the value of human life.
So I guess the answer is do unto others as you would equally as they have done unto you?
And I thought our religion was a religion of love.

The prisoners everyone is moaning over were a bunch of terrorists.
Now -- suppose you know that some of these prisoners have information about upcoming attacks, which could cost American lives, but because of their cultural attitudes, you can get them to talk by doing a bit of humiliation, like putting a dog collar on them, held by a US female.
Now let's see, what is your choice:
a) the heck with American lives, just we don't humiliate these darling terrorists, because we just "don't do things like that"
b) The H&&% with the terrorists, we'll do whatever it takes, especially just a bit of humiliation, which doesn't even do any physical damage to obtain the information, which will save American lives?
WELL???? What is your choice?

The whole world has turned upside down and that includes too many damn Americans (by birth only evidently). You forgot those zillions of "Americans" who just recently arrived (but are loyalists still to their countries of origin)!

An excellent collection and point.
A good companion article to the pictures:
Getting a Grip on the Iraqi Prison Scandal
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1131996/posts It's long past time for the U.S. to get a grip - and realize that we're in the fight of our lives with people who viciously murdered 3,000 of our neighbors in the heart of America's cultural and financial capital.
If the U.S. is serious about winning, it can't collapse into a convulsion of self doubt and recrimination every time a probable terrorist claims he was mistreated by his U.S. captors.
Instead of apologizing for the actions of troops who have been dispatched to a Middle Eastern hellhole half-a-world-away to keep the wolf from our door, the Bush administration should get off the defensive and begin to put this over-hyped episode in perspective.
A few points should be emphasized:
* The overwhelming majority of inmates at the Abu Ghriab prison were suspected of having participated in or having knowledge of attacks against U.S. soldiers. Very few of the prisoners were common street criminals.
* The photographs of prisoners being abused were taken at a cellblock known as "The Hard Site," where the worst and most dangerous were being detained.
* To date, there's no evidence whatsoever that any of the prisoners depicted in humiliating photos suffered anything more than embarrassment.

These soldiers did wrong and will be held acountable as will those that allowed it or encouraged it to happen.
True! Despite how savage the terrorist "behave," in this country we don't act that way or condone such behavior.
The most upsetting thing about this travesty committed by a few reservists is that the media is focusing far more attention on those acts than they ever have on the majority of the brave people who serve our country. The media has gone out of their way to find or create a scandal they can associate with Bush. They're licking their chops over this one, and I feel the same contempt for that type now as I did for the Kerry and Fonda types back in the '70s!

What has changed? Now they can point to pictures to "prove" they are right. I really don't care what they think, because it's true that we are their excuse for failure and will continue to be. The incidents anger me because of how it makes the rest of the military look among decent people. And because we know better.

he told me that German prisoners of war who were on graves detail were caught urinating on American bodies. He told me they took their rifle butts and knocked out all their teeth, young and old
Did the US soldiers guarding the Nazi's allow them to carry loaded rifles to bash in the teeth or did the Americans check to make sure that they were empty before giving them to the Nazi POW's? Did they remove the bayonettes? Just curious whether you swallowed the story hole or asked a few questions before deciding to spread this hogwash about.
Also, I would not exactly hold up a bunch of Nazis as examples for how civilized folks are supposed to behave, but that is just me. You, you are free to adopt whatever role modle you choose.

One always has the option of scrolling past the pictures, or not even clicking on the article if it has a warning that graphic pictures are included.
I don't think that what happened at that particular prison reflects anything more than an isolated incident, used by the liberal MSM and the world press to discredit our president.
