May 8, 2004: Today's food for thought is provided by a Reuters news story from "the sleepy town of Cumberland," home of the military company most implicated in the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal. This on-the-scene report from the American heartland is supposed to reveal to us the unelightened, vengeful kind of thinking that gave rise to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. But in fact, the common sense thinking of Cumberland's Joe Public actually puts the whole moral picture in a more realistic perspective. For example, here's what unenlightened Viet Nam war veteran, Robert Zalewsk, had to say about the admittedly unacceptable abuse of Iraqi prisoners: "People are trying to kill you. You got to protect yourself. [The abuse by the soldiers] was half what they [Iraqis] have done to us."
Obviously Robert isn't a regular reader of Noam Chomsky or Maureen Dowd.
But listen to the irrational musings of some of the other respondents......

I live about 20 minutes from Cumberland. It isn't Kennedy country. (But if it's a backwater, my little town is back of the backwater.)
Nonsense! If you have a good Hollywood agent, your opinion counts for plenty! Particularly if you are attractive and have very white teeth.
