After all of the cr@p that Rummy has had to put up with over the past couple of days, I want him to know that he is doing a great job as Secretary of Defense and he is now and always will be one of my favorite people in the George W. Bush Administration.

There are good days and there are rough days, and I want to let Secretary Rumsfeld know that I support him each and every day.

I'm not the most eloquent FReeper out there, but these are my sentiments.

HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE HOLDS A HEARING ON
TREATMENT OF IRAQI PRISONERS

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE JAMES R. LANGEVIN (D-RI) : The credibility question, where do we go from here? How do we restore our credibility on human rights, Mr. Secretary? How do you advise the president on this issue of restoring our credibility on human rights when we come to criticize other nations?

RUMSFELD:

Well, when you've got 2.4 men and women in uniform -- active duty, Guard, Reserve, Selective Reserve -- they're doing a lot of wonderful things in the world. Some people did some perfectly terrible things. What happened after that? We announced it. It became public. We're having an open process. We're prosecuting the people who have done something wrong.

The world is seeing what a democracy does. The world is seeing how people who care about human rights behave.

This isn't a pattern or practice or a policy of the government as it was under Saddam Hussein. This is something totally different.

And how do we always get from one step to the next step? We live our lives as best we can, knowing we're imperfect, mistakes get made, people do bad things to people.

We see it in every state in the union, every year -- murders, rapes.

How do we restore our credibility? What we do is, we get up the next day and try to live our lives better, and we try to do a better job in government and public service. And over time truth wins out.

We have a free, open system. We've got wonderful people in this country. We're not an evil society. There's not something bad about America. America is not what's wrong with the world.

And the overwhelming majority of the people in the world know that.

I mean, why do people line up to get into this country, year after year after year? I read all this stuff -- "people hate us, people don't like us" -- the fact of the matter is, people line up to come into this country every year.

Because it's better here than other places, and because they respect the fact that we respect human beings.

And we'll get by this. I don't like it any more than you do.

Clip from transcript, House Armed Services Committee, May 7, 2004

Thank you for this thread, Momaw. Thank you for your service, Secretary Rumsfeld!

The Unknown
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Often in our nation's history those who are working hardest for it are mercilessly and without warrant attacked through a vicious campaign of lies and nonsense. Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan are the most famous of our leaders who were so dangerously attacked.

Democrat danger to our nation grows daily and the Party's unholy alliance with Big Media has now gone into a direction which is reckless in its disregard for fact and reality. That alliance does not care if American troops are endangered as long as it can score points against the Bush administration.

Thank God the President has men of the caliber and unquestioned abilities of Don Rumsfeld. All true patriots support and admire you. May God Protect you from your Evil Persecutors.

Rummy, you have done a great job! No one could do it better! Just go about your job knowingly that the overwhelming number of the American people support and stand behind you! Screw John Kerry and his "traitor" Democrats! They will destroy America if they get the chance!!!!!

This thread is a great idea, and I'm sorry that I didn't find it earlier. Mr. Rumsfeld is a good man and one of the best people in this administration. His courage to speak the truth is rare and valuable. Our country needs men like him making the hard decisions and finding the right path forward.

The actions of the people in that jail are horrible. They've brought shame on themselves, the service, and the country. If this controversy destroys what we've worked so hard to accomplish, they will have made the deaths of so many people meaningless. They should be tried and punished for their actions.

From everything we know, Secretary Rumsfeld began investigating this situation as soon as he knew about it. He is not to blame, and I believe he will work to fix the situation. He needs to be given that opportunity to deal with these problems and continue the great work of winning this war against terrorism.

Secretary Rumsfeld, PLEASE STAY!

I've been telling people that on strictly mathematical terms, you are the most successful Secretary of Defense in our nation's history. I do not intend to diminish the brilliance of Warren Christopher, who appears to have taken us ahead rapidly through research and development. He's a part of this, too.

And while the left refuses to concede that any operational phase is over, you remember how they said Afghanistan was impossible. You remember all the cries of 'madness' and 'insanity' they made about our tiny force rolling into Iraq. We both understand the reason behind it.

Saddam wanted us to besiege Baghdad, and that would have cost us US soldiers' lives by the thousands, possibly even tens of thousands. We needed to appear weak to lure the enemy out. I remember when Hackworth called for your resignation, just prior to Saddam's complete meltdown. They owed you an apology. Few came. You were just 'lucky' twice.

I would like to thank you for your service to the United States and for your desire to free oppressed people when you have the chance.
