Does anyone know what our record in the past was regarding this sort of thing? I'm assuming that in any major war we've ever fought, there have been some instances of prisoner abuse. I would be surprised if this weren't the case, given the stresses of war and the fact that soldiers aren't hand-picked to include only Mr. Rogers types. Does anyone have any info on this?

Sure. When the US reached the Nazi concentration camps, most of the SS Guards they found were executed on the spot, to give one example.

And rightly so, I might add.

If we had just shot em on the spot, that would have been the end of it. Why even take prisoners in the first place if this is the grief you're going to get?

I tried to do some research yesterday on this very question.

My searches of UCMJ and such were very unfruitful, but I'm
not a lawyer, and have little experience with doing searches
in legal situations. I would love to discover what the
penalties for this type of behavior is, even. I know that
when in the military, we were all very heavily educated that
prisoners had to be treated with respect, and that and abuse
of them was counterproductive, and played into an enemy's hands.
