May 7, 2004 -- THE last time I was in Iraq, I met with a delegation of graduate students from Baghdad's best universities. Two hours into the discussion, one student said something extraordinary to me. He likened us to "doctors" and Iraq to a "patient" who needed radical surgery: "You [Americans] have started the operation. We are on the operating table. You can't leave now. You've got to finish," he pleaded.

THE last time I was in Iraq, I met with a delegation of graduate students from Baghdad's best universities. Two hours into the discussion, one student said something extraordinary to me. He likened us to "doctors" and Iraq to a "patient" who needed radical surgery: "You [Americans] have started the operation. We are on the operating table. You can't leave now. You've got to finish," he pleaded. I let him know that the United States was committed to restoring Iraq to health and would stay through the period of convalescence.

The accomplishmnts are mounting.
And I sure do see a lot of elated smiles on Iraqi faces. It's almost as if they still can't believe they're free of the fear that nasty dictator perpetrated throughout every aspect of their lives.

I am so very excited about this development for each of the approximately twenty Iraqis I have known during the years.
They were so brutalized by Thugs Hussein. I know that most of them are very capable and will make every effort to take advantage of this opportunity to restore Iraq.
Thank You President Bush and our whole country for giving the good people of Iraq this chance at long last.

But can Iraqi's with captive minds tolerate a free society?
Many believe that free will has to be regulated.
