Intex closing plant, laying off 115 workers

PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Intex Corp. plans to shut down its fabric printing plant by the end of June and lay off 115 workers, town officials said.

"It was a jaw dropper," Pilot Mountain town manager John Robertson said. "They had been a good employer in town. It's unfortunate the whole family over there will be out of work."

Company officials could not be reached for immediate comment.

The 95,000-square-foot factory has been open in Pilot Mountain since the late 1980s and could print 600,000 yards of fabric per week and bleach 120,000 pounds per week, according to the company's Web site.

The plant for the Greensboro-based company is the biggest water and sewer customer for the town of Pilot Mountain. Pilot Mountain Mayor Aaron Hunter said the closing will cost the town $130,000 to $150,000.

"The main thing is to get these people back to work," Robertson said. "We're just going to have to look at it from an economic view and see what the town has to do to keep taxes down and services up. We're going to have to tighten our belts, but there are 115 people who don't have a belt anymore."

And when will we hear when they're hired elsewhere? What's the unemployment rate, 5.7%? We're still in the range considered by economists to be "full employment"...

Yes that's correct. The creator of " The Andy Griffith Show" named locations in the show for places he knew in North Carolina. So the real place Pilot Mountain NC. became Mount Pilot in the show. Mount Airy NC. became Mayberry.

But, if you've been to this area - Surry County, NC - you know that it's not an hour from Raleigh, like the show said.
