OMAHA, Neb. -- A large anhydrous ammonia tank helped Sarpy County Sheriff's deputies bust a suspected methamphetamine lab Tuesday night.
Anhydrous is the key ingredient in meth, and officers spotted a 9,600-gallon tank in front of a house at 151st and Chandler streets. The owners had run a hose from the tank inside the house, according to deputies.
Several arrests were made. No further information was immediately available.

A buddy of mine is from Kansas, and they used it on the farm. They would literally pray on Sundays that they would never get downwind from it.

If the guy making $5.15 an hour sold it to them, they were busted.Around here, that guy would barely speak English, so he wouldn't have a clue what they were muttering about.

While this particular article is comical, in general this is no laughing matter. Farmers lose billions do to theft. A portion of this is theft of anhydrous ammonia used in fertilizing crops.

Anhydrous Ammonia injected into the ground, converts to a cost effective nitrogen fertilizer. It is also sprayed on hay as it is baled, to increase the protein ratio.

151st & Chandler Road is a farm. Granted, there are housing developments on three sides of the place (within an easy walk), but it is a farm. And, granted, it was still stupid, but it is not like it was in the middle of a residential area. I will bet that the farmer who was renting the house (and is still farming the land around it) will sell it to developers now.

Arrests following a long and complex sting operation netted our local police a couple of dozen of the bad guys recently. Apparently, plain clothed police went into convenience stores, carried two bottles of nasal spray to the checkout counter, and mumbled under their breath they were going to make meth. If the guy making $5.15 an hour sold it to them, they were busted.Yeah, that's exactly what a real meth cook would do while buying raw materials: mumble under his breath that he was going to make meth. More sterling police work by the Drug Warriors.

I've never heard of anhydrous, sounds potent. Anhydrous ammonia is some very nasty stuff.
