[history]
May 4, 2004 -- A prison guard who suffered brain damage when he was stabbed in the eye by an alleged al Qaeda terrorist screamed, "I am dead" yesterday as he was tossed out of court by a judge who sentenced his attacker to 32 years in prison. After Judge Deborah Batts ordered marshals to escort wheelchair-bound Louis Pepe from the courtroom, dozens of his fellow federal correction officers angrily marched out in protest.

Give him leniency because he didn't kill the guard???
That lawyer is lucky the man couldn't get up and break his neck.

He might have gotten leniency on the sentence but it doesn't mean he will serve it all. The only people who want this guy to live in prison are the muslims. And even they might turn their back on him now. This guy is a marked man. The only place safe for this guy might be death row where the guards have to protect this guy.

I don't think even death row would be safe for this scum.

I believe that the punishment for attempted murder should be the same as the punishment for murder. Anything else would be rewarding failure.

You remember this? I can't believe they're just now getting around to sentencing this guy.

You bet I remember this. Salim was part of the cell involved in the bombings of our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. I had been following the cases pre-9/11 in the NY Daily News (better coverage than the Post). One (maybe two)of the cell members--it could've been Salim, but I'm not sure--was due to be sentenced on 9/13/2001, and one of my first thoughts about 9/11 was that it was a jailbreak. (The attempted murder of Pepe was part of a jailbreak.) Pepe came very very close to losing his life, and he's finally now able to vent his rage at Salim. That he was removed from the courtroom is a travesty, especially because he's brain-injured.
And I do believe that Salim and others got postponements of their hearings/trials/sentencings because 9/11 would impact negatively on their case(s), in defense lawyer-speak. This lawyer for Salim is especially vile. I mean asking the judge to lower Salim's sentence because he didn't kill Pepe. Sheesh, what an (curse words deleted)idiot, just scummy.

Couldn't remember if Lynne Stewart was involved or not.

There's a lot of logic in that argument.
