Lou Dobbs rips Tom Donovan a new one
CNN ^ | 5-2-2004 | self

Did anyone see Lou Dobbs rip Tom Donovan, head of the US Chamber of Commerce, a new one on "Lou Dobbs Tonight" on CNN? Lou simply pulverized Donovan over job outsourcing. Donovan had no decent response and was left floundering. I thought the two were going to get into a fistfight on TV. Way to go Lou!!!

I'd rather buy a Japanese car built in the US than an "American" car built in Mexico.

The point is you can't have it both ways

And neither can you. The foreign companies that manufacture in the U.S. put to lie the free-trader myth that companies cannot compete here because of OSHA, litigation, wages, etc.

I, being a conservative, agree that these problems need to be addressed. However, the major reason that we have an exodus of manufacturing and some service jobs is pure, unmitigated greed. Of course, this shouldn't surprise anyone who will take an honest look at this generation of CEO's. Following behind the baby-boomers is kind of like being behind the horses in a parade. Lots of crap for us to pick up....I just hope we don't get buried in it.

Aren't most foreign companies that manufacture here non-union?

If I invest MY MONEY in MY BUSINESS it is NOT the business of "lawmakers" to tell me where I should get my employees. It's also NOT the employee's job to tell me what I will pay them. If they don't like it get a job somewhere else. It's NOT "your" job, it belongs to MY COMPANY. I am free to find someone else to fill that job if I am not satisfied with you just like you are also free to leave at any time you please.

I wonder who all those people are who are shopping at places like WalMart, Targets, Sam's, etc. to get (gasp!) CHEAPER PRICES? I keep hearing so many people complain but there is no sign of those same people avoiding the "DISCOUNT" stores. How do you think they can offer such DISCOUNTS? CHEAPER LABOR!

Is Lou Dobbs preaching about his own brand of subsidized-jobbing? I think he should stop preaching communism (or is it socialism) and shut the f#!% up.

When you invest your money in a business that writes the checks every week then you can tell me about "greed".

I think companies should be forced to pay higher wages to Americans.

It's the patriotic thing to do.

Bunk! Companys have to compete to survive. When unions demand high pay and high benefits compounded with rising costs, businesses have 2 choices, A) Get creamed by companys with cheaper labor and go under. B) play their game and outsource. You think this is a disaster, yet you ignore that this is .2% of the workforce. We create 5% of job from other companys from overseas who see a market and creat more jobs! Unemployment is under 6%. Why is this not a disaster with the boogie man of outsourceing. You Chicken Littleing a non-issue!

Shhhh...Lou Dobbs will hear you. Just hire Americans and be glad the government doesn't confiscate your business.

"Indeed, by simply revealing that you watch the Clinton News Network, I think that you have lost both your objectivity and the interest of 99.99% of FR."

Take a look at the many posts my topic generated, with most of the posters on my side!

Sounds like you need to take a deep breath and get a grip.

I know they would truly love to take it over because, after all, they are "smarter" than the rest of us.

Yes. And then they would only hire Americans at $90,000 a year and we could finally defeat those evil foreigners.

Dobbs is on a blind campaign against "outsourcing" as though it is some scourge which is destroying the country. This is simplistic at best and a populist demogogery at worst.

Outsourcing is no more going to kill of america than robots, machines, cars, electricity or any other things which changed but ultimately improved our economy and our way of life. Can you imagine how it would suck if everybody in America still worked in a field or in a mine?

This protectionist nonsense may sound good to people with no education but its certainly disingenuous coming from a guy who does nothing but cover business and economic news.

Dobbs should go on a crusade to change the corporate tax code to recapture foreign profits and make us more competitive overseas. Then we can just sit around and listen to foreigners whine about outsourced jobs in their own countries.

Why stop at ONLY $90,000? Why not just give them the entire company. It's for the good of the country. According to them it's only money that grows on trees in flyover country whenever they overspend anyway.

And the ONLY reason you and the rest of the (multi)national CEO's even have a company, is because the blood and sacrifice of our Founders who loved this country, spent their honor and fortunes to establish a Representative Republic, based upon our Blessed U.S.Constitution & Bill of Rights.

If they had allowed themselves to simply succomb to human GREED, they could have taken it ALL, and turned themselves into Kings and the Ruling Aristocracy.

You do realize that GREED IS A CHARACTER DEFECT ??

First of all, I never said it was a disaster. Secondly, thank you for making my point. Please explain, for the record, how foreign companies manage to compete here, in light of the usual free-trader litany of excuses: unions, OSHA, litigation, etc., etc., etc.

As I said, and you (predictably) paid no attention..these things need to be addressed. BUT, when foreign manufacturers flock to these shores, and do so profitably, at the same time that American manufacturers plead inability to compete...well, someone's lying.
