May 1, 2004 -- A college student called NFL star and war hero Pat Tillman an "idiot" who "got what he deserved," and now he's getting payback.

Rene Gonzalez wrote the vicious piece in the University of Massachusetts paper, The Daily Collegian, just after Tillman was killed in action in Afghanistan.

You have to be a real skidmark to denounced by the University of Massachusetts while a student writer there.

Also, you have to be a real skidmark to call yourself a writer and use a line such as: "a GI Joe Guy". That's about as prosey as, say, the average 11 year old girl gets.

The old maxim about "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" has been superceded:

Claiming death threats: the first refuge of liberals who have said something stoooooopid.

Thanks for your eloquent response and for keeping the faith with soldiers from my generation. We will never forget, nor will we allow the heros of today to be mistreated as we were.

Very well done letter. This Gonzalez guy gave voice to the extreme wing of the Kerry-Fonda-Kennedy axis of entitlement.

I hope that he is forced to wear these comments around his neck for the rest of his life. I hope he is never able to get a job.

"insensitive"

Interesting word usage. He still thinks he's right about a 'rambo getting what he deserved'. He's just 'apologizing' for not expressing it more acceptably.

I saw this on the Cardinals message board, I think it would be a great tribute to the soldiers.

I THINK THEY SHOULD PAINT ALL THE 40 YARD LINES IN ALL STADIUMS RED WHITE AND BLUE-- THE 40 YARD LINE FOR PAT NUMBER-- RED WHITE AND BLUE FOR EVERY SOLDIER WHO DIED FOR OUR COUNTRY.

THIS WOULD LET EVEN THE NEXT GENERATION KNOW JUST WHAT PAT AND EVERY OTHER SOLDIER DID FOR US. WHAT BETTER MEMORIAL COULD YOU GIVE?

PEOPLE WILL ALWAY KNOW WHY THE 40 YARD LINE STANDS OUT AMONG ALL THE OTHER ORDINARY LINES. PAT WAS NO ORDINARY MAN HE STOOD OUT. THANKS

Gonzalez has a problem with the US, so why isn't he attending one of the fine learning institutions on the isle of Puerto Rico?

I read what this guy wrote, and immediately thought it could have been written by Michael Moore: same style, same sort of wording, same "flavor".

I would guess this "proud author" is a Michael Moore fan.

In a way, I'm glad he wrote it: Left wingers have been crowing piously about "supporting the troops-opposing the war" for quite some time now;but that is-and always has been a bald-faced lie.

These people are elitists, who think of our volunteer troops as suckers, rednecks, and Rambo Wannabees, who deserve no more attention than the lackey who parks their BMW when they go to a trendy restaurant.

They don't have the fiber to be anything but loud-mouthed critics of the military-but I'll let you in on a little secret: Go to any flea market, where there is a dealer in "military surplus",and you will see these creeps lined up-3 deep-to buy camoflagued dungarees, entrenching tools, patches, etc.

When their children ask: " Daddy, what did you do in the war?",they try to look mysterious, and they say: "I'd love to tell you,but I really can't talk about it."

Their wives, meanwhile, roll their eyes-because they KNOW what their husbands are. Sometimes, when they see one of our brave young men in uniform, they get a little bit "tingley",fantasizing about what a REAL man would be like;but it passes: How many servicemen could make the payments on a Beemer,or an SUV,or tennis lessons,etc.,etc.,etc. ???

Excellent!

I could not respond to this creep. What I would have said would not have belonged in print anymore than this POS belongs in America.

UM should do some serious introspection to find out why they produced something like this worm. The American university system has become a cesspit.

"I hope this thing follows him around for years to come with potential employers. he couldn't even get away with this in academia, the private sector would definitely frown on this sort of thing."

I could not agree with you more. Unfortunately, he'll most likely be welcomed with open arms into the DNC. They'll praise his courage for speaking out.

Personally, I think the sorry assed little scum bag should be kicked out of school and immediately be taken to someplace like Ft. Bragg and used in any way the drill instructors see fit. Then we'll talk about the concept of "getting what he deserved."

To my dearest FReeper sister and fellow Patriot, Kay...

your response to the little piglet from UMass was excellent and inspiring. You described everything that needed so doing; Tillman's character and bravery as defined by his joining up (and NOT because he was a rich man foregoing his fame), the historical precedents of patriotism as the norm our forefathers had, and the inherent cowardice and hypocrisy that is rife within the left.

As an American of Puerto Rican ancestry, I can attest to the seeming insanity of living in a worldview defined by group identities and a continual, daily cheapening of the values upon which America is built. It is a life where - if one does not take that extra step to find out why things are the way others say they are - one can easily find that white means bad, black and brown means good, thought and logic are eschewed in favor of feelings, which naturally leads to what we FReepers easily recognize today as moral relativism and bowing before the Most Wise Goddess of Non-Judgementalism.

From there, it is a seemingly small step towards denying belief in anything that requires taking a stand in favor of Western Judeo-Christian values... because these same values allowed Humanity to free itself from the sort of group-centered views that once defined our ancient and tribal beginnings, and which in some parts of the world - Iraq with it's Sunni/Shia/Kurd and tribal structures comes to mind - still exist.

Perhaps it's not such a small step after all - I'm reminded of a book written by Dr. Scott Peck, "People of the Lie" - wherein the author convinced me that those who spend years living a lie may come to a point where they privately realize their lies, yet still cannot free themselves from the lies because in their revelation, they see that they have built their life upon a false foundation... and at that point, the ordinary nature of their humanity decides it is too difficult to accept their wrong and change. What could have been an epiphany instead becomes yet another compromise against seeking the truth... and it's sooo much easier to do! A small step, indeed... not so small when one looks into the mirror of his soul, and sees behind his reflection the falsehoods that lie behind him.

Mr. Gonzales lives his lie yet, this I feel certain of despite not (nor ever wanting to...) knowing him. He is a Fool, and furthermore, one who has probably spent many tens of thousands of dollars (... of either his money or his daddy's, probably the latter, but that's not important - he's "entitled" to it...) gaining the education at a "prestigious" university that has made him the fool he is today.

At first impression, I would likely give him the benefit of the doubt, see his articulateness (not to be mistaken as proof of integrity &/or character) and say there is yet hope for him, or that maybe he hasn't yet reached the point in his life where he re-appraises that life, that point where he "looks into the mirror of his soul". Further reading of his comments regarding Pat Tillman, though, indicate to me that he might already have had his chance, and - in looking at that reflection in the mirror, and all that lay behind it - decided that it was easier to continue living the lie than it was to seek the truth, or to dare to rebuild his life on a foundation of character, integrity, patriotism and faith in God.

But having made this decision, Gonzales still doesn't like what he saw in his reflection... someone must be blamed! Pat Tillman - American Hero - was a convenient target, and one whom - from I pray be his current place in the Right Palm of our Lord - would not respond in defense against the charges brought against him by this little pup. Mr. Gonzales knows cowardice well; he epitomizes it.

Mr. Gonzales in his disgusting attack against Pat Tillman, attacks all Americans of good will and love of country. To paraphrase John Adams, Rene Gonzales "...is no countryman of mine...".
