"Fox News Sunday's" Chris Wallace announced Friday that he's planning to respond to ABC "Nightline" host Ted Koppel's decision to air photos and names of GI's Killed in Iraq, calling Koppel's broadcast "a stunt."
"I think it is such a stunt," Wallace told WRKO-Boston radio host Howie Carr.
"I will just say one thing to all of your listeners," he added. "Watch 'Fox News Sunday' this Sunday because we are going to have our response to Koppel and 'Nightline.'"
Wallace refused to be more specific about his plans for Sunday's show, but told Carr his response would be "a corrective."
"It's not a stunt, it's a corrective. It's what Fox News was invented to be, which is, we're different than the other guys and we're going to give you the other side of the story."
Pressed by Carr, Wallace elaborated just a bit. "We have an announcement we're going to make about Mr. Koppel and 'Nightline' and their show - and our response to it."
Asked if he was "declaring war on Ted Koppel on Sunday morning," Wallace told Carr, "You'll see. Some people may think it's that. . . It's going to make some news."
As I searched for the remote to change the channel last night when Nightline came on, I was struck by this thought: I had attended our community's annual Relay for Life walk against cancer a few hours before. No one read any cancer victims names, but you could feel their presence. No one made a grand production of showing cancer victims names with their photos on a screen, but we still knew about them. Sure, there were individul photos and names on luminarias that lined the track. But no one had to read off every name for the point to be made- we knew these people had suffered and died at the cruel hands of cancer. We didn't need to be reminded of that in any way. They are silent heroes, in my book. They never craved the spotlight, and certainly wouldn't have wanted it that way. They were just living their lives when tragedy struck. Silent heroes don't need some media whore to publicize their plight for ratings sake to make their stories known. Your friend, in my book, is one of those silent heroes, and I will never forget him, even though I never knew him.
Maybe because, given the Repubs track record, it's true?
I got off the phone with my dad and he sounds like he believes all the DNC talking points.
Bernard Shaw was in Iran? [See what happens when you type too fast? ;-D]
My friend Don DiFranco worked in the broadcast transmitter room directly under the antenna that was fashioned into an American flag. I will be able to better remember him as I knew him when we one day get confirmation of OBL's demise.
What should Mr. Wallace describe it as?
