An essay of no more than 300 words that answers this question: Why is the President's call to community service important and how have you demonstrated it?

How?
Write your essay and fill out the form below. Ten finalists may be invited to film a video clip that will be posted to the web and voted on by the public.

Why?
Because what you think matters... and the winner may deliver a speech to the nation during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

When?
The deadline for contest submissions is June 15, 2004. Voting will be available on the Convention website and on the RNC's voter registration vehicle, "Reggie the Rig," and on MTV.com. The winner will be announced on MTV's TRL.

Eligibility
  • You must be between the ages of 18-24 years old to be eligible.
  • You must be available for travel to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City from August 28 - September 2. Travel and housing will be provided.
  • You must be a registered voter. Submissions will not be considered complete until we have received a faxed copy of your Voter Registration Card at (212) 356-2280, attention Essay Contest.
Guidelines
  • Essays should not exceed 300 words.
  • Decisions are final and no essays will be returned.
  • Winner will be announced mid-August.

MTV and the 2004 Republican National Convention
"Stand Up and Holla!"

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN A PRIZE. CONTEST OPEN TO LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES WHO ARE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 24 YEARS OF AGE AT TIME OF ENTRY.

  1. Promotion Period: "Stand up and Holla!" (the "Contest") commences at 6:00 p.m. (EST) on April 19, 2004 and ends at 11:59 p.m. (EST) on June 15, 2004. All entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. (EST) on June 15, 2004.

  2. To Enter: Log onto www.2004nycgop.org (the "Web Site"), a Web Site owned and controlled by the Committee on Arrangements for the 2004 Republican National Convention ("COA"). Completely fill out all required data fields on the registration form, including the essay portion, and return such registration form along with a scanned or faxed copy of your voter registration card to be entered into the Contest (each a "Entry" or "Entries"). An Entry which has been submitted electronically in accordance with these Official Rules shall be hereinafter referred to as "Eligible Entries." The essay portion of the registration form must consist of an original writing sample, not to exceed 300 words in length (the "Essay"). The Essay must be typed in the space provided on the Web Site. The Essay should be in response to the following question: "Why is the President's Call to Community Service Important and How Have You Demonstrated It?" (the "Essay Topic"). Each Entry must contain solely the entrant's original ideas and language. Entries must be received by midnight (EST) on June 15, 2004.

    You may enter only once. Entries that are not the original work of the entrant or if the information is incomplete on the registration form or any other information requested is not given, the Entry will not be accepted. No responsibility is assumed for incorrect or inaccurate Entry information whether caused by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in this Contest or by any human error which may occur in the processing of Entries to this Contest. COA or MTV Networks ("MTVN") are not responsible for any problems or technical malfunctions of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of email or players on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at the Web Site or any web site or combination thereof, including injury or damage to participants or to any other person's computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading materials in this Contest. If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of COA and MTVN which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Contest or for any reason COA deems necessary, COA reserves the right in its sole and unequivocal discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, delay or suspend the Contest due to any reason of a technical, creative or other nature. Entries which have been tampered with or altered are void. In the event of a dispute over who submitted a winning Entry, the holder of the winning email account will be declared the winner. All Entries become the property of the COA and will not be returned.

  3. Winner Selection: In late June/early July, a selection committee comprised of representatives from COA, and other like-minded organizations determined by COA, will judge all Eligible Entries based on the judging criteria set forth below in Paragraph 6 to determine the top 50 entrants (each a "Semi-Finalist"). Each Semi-Finalist will be required to submit a digital video message of themselves for the selection committee which must be received electronically by the COA (no video tapes or discs will be accepted – must attach video and send via e-mail) no later than midnight (EST) on July 10, 2004. The message must be the Semi-Finalist introducing themselves and delivering their original essay as a speech. Starting on or about July 15, 2004, the selection committee will judge the Semi-Finalists to determine the final Entries (each a "Finalist"). Beginning on or about July 20 through July 25, 2004, the Finalists may tape a 30 second segment of their essay to be shown on www.MTV.com. The online voting process will begin at or around 9:00 a.m. (EST) on July 26, and continue through August 9, 2004. The foregoing dates are subject to change at COA's sole discretion. The Finalist who receives the highest number of votes will be deemed the Grand Prize Winner. In the event of a tie or dispute, COA will make the final determination of the Grand Prize Winner.

    The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on or about August 16, 2004 however, COA reserves the right to delay announcement of the Grand Prize Winner in its sole and unequivocal discretion. COA will contact the Grand Prize Winner by telephone or e-mail on or before August 14, 2004. COA will make up to three attempts to contact the Grand Prize Winner over a 48 hour period. If a potential Grand Prize Winner is unreachable during the 48 hours in which he or she is called (no messages will be left on answering machines) or if such potential Grand Prize Winner should fail to comply with these Official Rules, an alternate Grand Prize Winner may be selected from all remaining Eligible Entries.

  4. Prizing: Semi-Finalists and Grand Prize – One (1) Grand Prize Winner will attend the 2004 Republican National Convention and may appear and speak during one of the nights of the Convention at prime time (the "Grand Prize"). In order to attend the Convention and appear, all Finalists and the Grand Prize Winner must (a) be a person(s) eligible to vote (b) provide a copy of their voter registration card to the COA (c) provide the COA with three (3) character references by July 10, 2004 including telephone numbers, and (d) be available for travel between August 28, 2004 and September 3, 2004. Should the Grand Prize Winner fail to fulfill any of these criteria, the Grand Prize shall be deemed forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate winner in COA's sole discretion. The Grand Prize may not be substituted for cash. No other prizes will be awarded. The receipt of a Grand Prize by Grand Prize Winner is subject to the following conditions: Grand Prize Winner must (a) sign all required legal documents provided by COA , (b) not have a criminal record and (c) provide all information necessary to conduct and be cleared through a COA background security check.

  5. Eligibility: Contest is open to legal residents of the continental United States between the ages of 18 and 24 years old at time of Entry and who are registered to vote. VOID WHEREVER PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW. Employees of COA, Viacom International Inc., MTV Networks, and each of their respective affiliated companies, sponsors, subsidiaries, advertising agencies (and the immediate families of each) are not eligible. By participating in this Contest, entrants agree to be bound by these official rules ("Official Rules") and by the decisions of COA whose decisions are final in all matters relating to this Contest.

  6. Judging Criteria: Eligible Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: originality, factual content and persuasiveness of argument regarding the Essay Topic.

    All interpretations of the rules and decisions by COA are final. COA reserves the right, in its sole and unequivocal discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds or believes to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or Web Site; to be acting in violation of the Official Rules; or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY A PARTICIPANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, COA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PARTICIPANT/INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. THE NEW YORK COURTS (STATE AND FEDERAL) SHALL HAVE SOLE JURISDICTION OF ANY CONTROVERSIES REGARDING THE CONTEST AND THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK SHALL GOVERN THE CONTEST. EACH ENTRANT WAIVES ANY AND ALL OBJECTIONS TO JURISDICTION AND VENUE IN THESE COURTS AND HEREBY SUBMITS TO THE JURISDICTION OF THOSE COURTS.

  7. Arrangements for the fulfillment of the Grand Prize will be made by COA. COA reserves the right in its sole discretion to substitute the Grand Prize, for any reason that COA deems necessary. All prizes are non-transferable. The Grand Prize Winner must sign (i) an affidavit of eligibility and release the COA and any and all affiliated entities and each of the foregoing: members, officers, officials, employees, or agents of RNC, of the COA, or of the Executive Committee of RNC from any and all liability, claims, demands and causes of action for personal injury and/or damage, theft, loss, or any other harm suffered in connection with this Contest or the use or acceptance of the Grand Prize or any portion thereof to be eligible for the Grand Prize; (ii) except where prohibited, a promotional release granting the right to use his or her name and likeness for advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation. Entry into this Contest constitutes Finalist's, Semi-Finalist's and Grand Prize Winner's agreement to sign such releases. ANY VIOLATION OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES BY ANY GRAND PRIZE WINNER (AT COA'S SOLE DISCRETION) WILL RESULT IN SUCH GRAND PRIZE WINNER'S DISQUALIFICATION AS A GRAND PRIZE WINNER OF "STAND UP AND HOLLA!" AND ALL PRIVILEGES AS THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER WILL BE IMMEDIATELY TERMINTATED. Upon receipt of any part of the prize, prize recipients are required to comply with any and all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.

  8. Past experience has confirmed that contests and other competitions generate substantially similar submissions or entries which closely resemble concepts and ideas that have been independently developed by COA before or after the Contest. Accordingly, entrants may subsequently see a COA presentation which seemingly incorporates an idea or concept or includes materials similar to that contained in their Entries. Any similarity is purely coincidental and unavoidable in light of the volume of ideas which COA considered in the course of this program development. Because of this possibility, contestants hereby agree to submit their Entries under the following terms and conditions: (i) that COA may use any ideas, concepts, material, in whole or in part, contained in an Entry; (ii) that all materials submitted become the property of COA and will not be returned; (iii) that all materials submitted are free from any lien or claim by anyone, including, but not limited to any union, guild or performance rights society; (iv) entrants have obtained all rights, permissions and licenses necessary to use the Entries for any purpose; (v) that no Entry or any part thereof infringes any trademark or copyright or otherwise violates anyone's right of privacy or publicity; and (vi) entrants indemnify and hold harmless COA, RNC, and MTV Networks a division of Viacom International Inc., from any claims, suits, losses, damages and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) that arise from any breach of the following conditions. All entrants agree to the foregoing and in addition agree to obtain, upon request of COA any documentation and releases necessary to prove their unrestricted ownership in all materials contained in their Entry and their right to use such materials without limitation for any purpose. They further agree, if chosen as Grand Prize Winner, to assign all rights, titles and interests in all material and agree to sign such documentation as is necessary to formalize this assignment.

    Notwithstanding the foregoing, entrants agree that their Entry may be used by COA and/or MTVN in whole or in part for any purpose whatsoever without compensation to non-prize winner entrants.

  9. For the name of the Grand Prize Winner and/or Official Rules, submit e-mail to:

    All requests must be received by September 3, 2004.

  10. This Contest is a joint participation in a promotion by MTV Networks, 1515 Broadway, New York, NY 10036 and the Committee on Arrangement for the 2004 Republican National Convention, P.O. Box 2504, New York, New York, 10116 in conjunction with a similar contest being held by the Democratic National Convention.

  11. Notice: These rules are subject to change at anytime at the sole and unequivocal discretion of the COA.

It might be nice if somewhere in the contest rules, somebody explained what exactly the "President's call to community service" is, and whether or not it involves spending money confiscated from the tax payer under threat of imprisonment for non-compliance.

Thank you for all the pings today, I didn't ping this or the other essay one because the age range is more Gen-Y than Gen-X (Plus my boss was a little nosey early this morning).

I wish this essay contest was for 18-34, I wouldn't mind speaking at the convention, though I doubt my "Pataki is more liberal than Hillary and should be kicked out of the party" essay would be a winner.
