Generals Conway and Mattis have great reputations in the Corps...they know what they're doing. If they brokered this deal, then I can live with it.
At the same time, it must be a helluva leadership challenge to explain to this to the grunts...especially the grunts in E/2/4.

"Generals Conway and Mattis have great reputations in the Corps"God I hope so...but I would really like to know why they did it. Too many of these generals when they retire become DemoRATS like Wesley Clark. I'm afraid Franks is bordering that way too. Hope I'm wrong, really do.

Your patriotism list is old-fashioned, boring, hard, and takes to much courage and conviction.
I like the drama-induced, Oprah, Springer, Dr. Phil, and the Oliver Stone America better.
"Full Metal Jacket", "The Deer Hunter", "Apocalypse Now", "All the Presidents Men", and Woodstock are a much healthier mindset.

"Generals Conway and Mattis have great reputations in the Corps...they know what they're doing. If they brokered this deal" If the deal is as early reported, I doubt it. This is too political and far reaching. Sounds like Brahimi.

You keep all those good folks at ATRW in line... Haven't much time these days. Had to put this up, as I'm sickened by the Nuke-em-now-or-Surrender crowd, especially over Fallujah.
The events there prove the wisdom of our being there in the first place: a proper and powerful statement of power to establish political solutions where none were before possible. Watch for more in coming months. World politics have been turned upside down. It's a marvel to watch -- if you have the patience.
Best wishes!

I'm kinda optimistic about this as well.
The way I see it, this general showed up and said, I can handle this for you. For weeks the international community has been saying the Iraqis need to police themselves. The US has been saying the same thing. This guy wants to do it. Let's let him level the place.
If it turns out he's a lying scumbag, we've got him surrounded as well. Then we can really take our gloves off. (MOABs, B-52s, cruise missles - that sort of thing.)

My freind Marc Maquis, who wisely got out of France after France surrendered to Algeria, sends:
Non, ce n'est pas vrai. To qualeefy for le passesport Francais, you must provide preuf of having actuellement surrendered to zombody.
Surrendering zee balls to zee woman ees borderline acceptable.
