I'm so proud of her. May you relive this moment over and over and over and over.
(I may be a city slicker, but what's a groundhog doing in a tree?)

Not a good method for gun handling and safety. This mentality is mind-boggling. If he were a urgeon, would he walk her through an operation?!

Groundhogs climb trees. I doubt it was sick.
From http://www.hoghaven.com/gfaq.htm
Q. Do groundhogs climb trees? Yes, with our sharp claws we can climb trees. Although we prefer to stay close to the ground, we will occasionally climb trees for food or to escape predators.
Poor little guy. Oh well, at least it was probably a quick death for the little critter. Most folks think of groundhogs as a nuissance, but me and my wife think of em as little friends. Maybe cuz they're so much like our pet guinea pigs.

My first read of your title was that a ground hog was killing your wife.
Anyway, why would you want to kill a ground hog anyway ?

Groundhogs are nasty varmints and are rabid at a very high rate...had a deformed one that came after me and my dog on a trail hike one day...it was hissing like a danged snake and was foaming at the mouth....
Unfortunately I didnt have my 22 Smitty with me...very nasty critters....when they hit 20lbs
they are almost formidable...great fun to nail with the .17 HMR though...

Could we send your SIL to New York to clean out the trees in Central Park? They've had a problem with a different kind of varmint lately.

Did they wash their hands? If they touched it and it has rabies and they didn't wash...Well, you might want to get it to a lab to check for rabies. Afterall, it did climb a tree...
