"Chicken Hawk"
Posted on 04/28/2004 9:43:46 AM PDT by cvq3842
The Democrats love to use this term to describe Republicans who did not serve in Viet Nam, but who support the Iraq war. I will repeat the usual objections to this offensive tactic. If we always picked the person with the most impressive military record, Bob Dole would have been President and Bill Clinton would still be somewhere in Arkansas. Also, I think criminals should be caught, fires should be put out, and that military action is sometimes necessary. Is my opinion of less value because I am not a policeman, fireman, or soldier? Also, does the idea that we need veterans as leaders mean that women are less qualified for high office, if there's a lower percentage of women who served?
Again, we should honor every person who puts on the uniform and serves the country. I don't think Republicans are disputing that. (Maybe it's the liberals projecting their own poor treatment of returning Viet Nam veterans onto others that's the problem.)
The thing that really gets me, though, is that I seem to recall that the term "chicken hawk" somehow refers to a pedophile, a pimp for young girls, or something like that. I don't know where I heard it. (Is it in the movie Taxi Driver? I haven't seen that one in a while.) Surely the Democrats must know of this other meaning, but use the term anyway. So the idea, I guess, is that Republicans are not only cowards and hypocrites, but outright perverts and deviates as well.
A new low.
I shouldn't be all that surprised, given McAulliffe's statements, and now Kerry's, about Bush's military service. But really - this is not a junior high school student council election. Is this all the Democrats have? Is it possible at all that the public will fall for this mindless drivel? Or have the Democrats totally lost their minds?

The democrats need to keep this up. Even the most clueless can see insanity and will rightly stay away from it. They are preaching to their own choir and alienating everyone else.

I sent Lautenberg's office an e-mail and have made three calls to his DC office. The office is apparently being overwhelmed with calls protesting "chicken hawk." For anyone interested, the number is 202-224-3224.

Naw...I think a chicken hawk is someone who was old enough and healthy enough to have fought in Vietnam and allowed their friends, relatives and neighbors to go...get wounded and killed basically do the "dirty work" keeping America safe..and the whole time the war raged they were against the war...only when it was "Their" ass on the line....or next in line to go....
And now that they are too old to fight.. and their kids are safe at home....are suddenly very ambitious about other men's children going to war to die for their new found conservatism and are outspoken about it..
imo

Is my opinion of less value because I am not a policeman, fireman, or soldier? Well no. You didn't exhaust the possibilities that devalue your vote. It is of "less value" because, presumably, you are not in a protected special interest group -- minority (whatever that means, but not white male), feminist, lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgendered, AARP, undocumented immigrant, Muslim (don't search more than two on any plane, per Jamie Gorelick) -- need I go on?

Is it possible at all that the public will fall for this mindless drivel?YES. The Sheep will believe everything they're told. As long as they've got their bread and circuses, the Left will be in power forever.

"Is this all the Democrats have? Is it possible at all that the public will fall for this mindless drivel? Or have the Democrats totally lost their minds?"
Is this all the Dims have?
Well, in addition to scaring old people about Social Security and medical benefits and the economy, yes, that's about it. Notice that Kerry is now dragging out Bush's service for the second (?) time.
Is it possible...this mindless drivel?
Their dedicated base, sure they buy it all. The good news for all of us Pubbies IMHO is that they are alienating the people who elect Presidents, the undecided's.
Have the Dim's totally lost their minds?
They elected BJ - any other questions?

Fairly accurate description. Which is why all young republican men should have at least tried to join the service. You've also described a problem that a low/no exemption military draft would remedy.

US presidents with absolutely no military service: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Q. Adams, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, James Polk, Millard Fillmore, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt (but he was ass't sec'y of the Navy), William Clinton. Others had trivial service (such as Lincoln, LBJ, and Reagan).

If the "'Rats" insist on calling Dubya a chicken hawk ... then the obvious question has to be answered ... what do you call Clinton!? My recollection ... going back to '91 thru 2000 ... the "Rats" had no problem with their draft dodger, perjurer-in-chief Bill Clinton.
